    Keeping Up Ambient Temps

(I'm not quite sure where to put this, so if this is the wrong subforum for this question I apologize)

I am currently in the process of doing research for my hopefully first snake and I'm trying to work out the issue of keeping ambient temps up. From what I understand most rat snakes/kingsnakes need ambient temps at about 75-80* but my room can get down to 65* in the winter. Will heat lamps or CHEs do enough to bring the temps up by themselves, or would it be necessary to insulate the sides of the enclosure as well? Should I instead try to raise the temps of my whole room with something like a space heater?

I usually keep colubrids with an ambient temp of 75 most of the year (80 for ambient is overkilled for kings and many other species)

During the winter the room temps is 68 which create no issue whatsoever since the hotspot is still on at 84/85, allowing proper digestion.

You are within range really as lower winter temps for colubrid is not a problem, feeding and activity may slow down a bit but chances are it won't.

    Re: Keeping Up Ambient Temps

Our corn did not do well in the same room as our other snakes where his ambient was consistently 77-80. He stopped eating. We moved him downstairs where the air is much cooler and he is doing great and hasn't missed a meal in several weeks. He has a heat lamp to maintain a warm side of about 84, cool side is usually around 73, sometimes up to 75. I find him using hides on both ends.

Thank you for the new information! It's good to hear that I won't need to do anything extra for proper ambient temps

I turn the cage heater off at night and let the temperature drop to around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This simulates wild conditions.

I keep my Kingsnake with ambient of 70-75 (depending on the time of the year) and a hot spot of about 85.
