A day with wolves.
I spent time studding animals in the wild when I get a chance. I spent a day with a wild pack of wolves under the supervision of a biologist friend of mine and it was amazing to see how they behave in the wild. Very militaristic when dealing with someone new around to see if you are friend, foe, or food. Friend being a generous word for "you pose no threat". Mama to most of the pack (I think) and mate to the leader of the pack was the true woman in charge. She barked orders to the others. Now they were somewhat acquainted with the presence of people but had little interest in us. When I walked up they noticed me right away and I am sure could smell me as a new presence. Mama began to vocalize her concerns. Daddy (alpha male) stood in front of the pack on high alert looking as large and foreboding as he could. His face was full of scars and one ear was missing chunks. I was told by the guy who was studying them that he was being challenged by one of his offspring from time to time. Now there were 2 brothers. One was often challenge the father for leadership of the pack and his litter mate that was right there encouraging him. The other juvenile males were in formation surrounding mama whos pups, from a litter she had 3 weeks earlier, were standing at her feet attempting to hide in the grass at her feet. The juvenile females were attempting to hide behind mama and all the males.
Daddy was clear in his challenge to my presence. He was saying, "I am in charge and will protect my family!". This was amazing to me how efficient they responded and performed Mamas orders. A strong level of coordination and respect for what they were told. We were out in the open. Any of them could come right up to us and I was amazed when Daddy decided to walk close. I could not resist the urge to offer my hand with my eyes avoiding direct contact with him. He came within inches of my hand. Adrenaline was pumping and my heart was racing as he sniffed the air. He just stood there for a moment. I can only speculate what he might be thinking. He simply turned around and went about 20 feet away and settled down keeping a close watch on me. Mama was took another 15 to 20 minuets to relax and even then she kept the pups close to her.
I was loving every moment of this. After about an hour passes and the entire pack began to relax. Daddy was starting to pretend to ignore us. Mama was still keeping a watchful eye. I was surprised at how strict she was on the pups and disciplined them rather harshly from time to time when they did something that needed correcting. By now the juvenile males were starting to investigate us. Yep... the 2 brothers were the first two that approached. Keep in mind was briefed ahead of time on what to do nor do I recommend doing this on your own. One tried to distract me while the other male (the assumed next alpha of the pack) tried to come up from behind. The male behind me nudged me with his snout and nibbled to see my reaction. I quickly turned and smacked him hard right on the nose. I hit him as hard as I could! The nose is not a good place to get hit because it hurts! Was told that this was the proper response to let him know he could not dominate me. Mama stood up looking at me as the 2 males backed off with a little more respect for me. He was testing me. I was told that any other response I would be seen as prey and most likely killed by the pack. Daddy just looked over and then went back to lounging in the shade.
The next 5 hours was simply amazing. The 2 males tried 3 more times to challenge me and as long as I didn't back down but did not act aggressively towards them I was in no real danger. I loved every moment of it!
