    quick question

Ive been reading up on breeding and morps and such for a while now. I am curious about offspring from 2 different morps. For example. What if i bred a piebald and an Albino. THey are both simple recessive traits. would the offspring be piebald and albino or just one or the other? Thanks

    Re: quick question

The offspring from a pied x albino breeding would be double het. for pied/albino. No visible morphs would be produced. But if you breed the DH offspring together, you have a 1 in 16 chance of producing a double homozygous pied/albino. From the DH breeding you can also produce pieds, albinos, and possible DH pied/albinos.

Here is a pic of RDR's lavander albino/pied:

    Re: quick question

I am by no means a genetics expert, but I believe when breeding the two you would end up with double hets. All looking normal but each carrying the genes for pied and albino. Breeding the double het offspring would result in a 1/16 (if I remember correctly) chance of producing a albino pied. I hope I got that right.

    Re: quick question

Wow I guess i still have a lot to learn =) I want to get into breeding so bad. Is it bad or unethical to breed brothers/sisters together? Thanks so much for the responses and links!

    Re: quick question

Ok, so I've done a lot of thinking and talked with the wife and I'm very seriously considering breeding. I think I'll start a little slower and go with a single recessive morph before I try to get into double hets and such. I'm going to go with either piebald or albino. What is a fair price to pay for 100% hets of either of these and any recomendations for breeders to buy from? Also, is it difficult to sell the offspring, is the market pretty easy going? I know of kingsnake's classifieds, but I can't find out if most of those posts are successful purchases or not. Thank you all for your help!

    Re: quick question

a het albino pair can run from $650 to $800
a het pied pair can run from $1500 to $1700

There are alot of good breeders out there....we have some great breeders on this site. The market is great Figure out what you want....then try to find the breeder that has some available....thats how I would do it. If you figure out what you want...I can think of a few breeders off the top of my head that have some het albinos and het pieds available.

    Re: quick question

Well, I have plenty of time for planning at this stage. I have to get through christmas first and get all the equipment i need and save the money for them. Im thinking in the spring. Around what time of year do most breeders have new stock available? And another question... Is it bad to breed siblings? I cant seem to even find this question anywhere, let alone the answer to it. Thanks again everyone

    Re: quick question

Inbreeding is often done with captive snakes. Whether or not a generation or two of it is detrimental is not generally agreed on. I try to avoid it when possible just in case but there are those who swear it doesn't hurt.

    Re: quick question

If you hunt you can find deals, I got my first het albino pair this summer. An unrelated pair from two different breeders, and of different blood lines. The male came to $112 shipped, now I originally purchased two males to get the deal so double that ammount but I got my money back in trade for one of the males so that was the end cost for the one male I kept. I got the female het albino for $510 shipped which was really good deal...a little less than you will find other places.

so that's what $622 shipped for the pair...be prepared to spend money LOL but its worth it if you "go all the way".
