How to bring home new snakes
So my wife and I are going to Tinley Park in a couple weeks and I'm hoping to bring home 2 or 3 new scaled babies. The temperature that day will only be 45 degrees and we have a two and a half hour drive home. Of course we'll have the heat on in the car but will that be enough for them? I was thinking of insulating a cardboard box with styrofoam and newspaper with a hand warmer or 2. Will that be too much? I just don't want them to get too cold on the long ride home. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

You’re not to far off as far as how to go about it. You have a decent plan. I’ve always used modified coolers. I also suggest bringing a temp gun. You have to be careful because it’s easier then you think to overheat them in the car also. So you gotta be careful both ways. Best of luck.

Re: How to bring home new snakes
Hey, I’m to Probably going to Tinley too! As long as your snakes aren’t going to be in the cold for too long, they’ll be fine in the car. If you want, it would be a good idea to bring a styrofoam cooler with holes drilled in and add a REPTILE SAFE heat pack in it (don’t use hand warmers, they can heat up to 120 degrees and can seriously burn or even kill your reptiles.) Buy specialty heat packs made specifically for reptiles and amphibians which only heat to 70-80 degrees. Other than that, it should be a fun time!

I'm all for traveling with snakes in an "ice chest/aka cooler/aka styrofoam box, and as far as keeping them warm, a heat pack may be over-kill. You don't
want too much or too little warmth. Personally, I'd take some very hot water* in a thermos, & then for the trip home, decant the now-warm water into a
plastic bottle & keep it in the "cooler" with the snakes. They'll be comfy & not cooked. *Or bring hot coffee instead of water, something for you too.

I didn't realize hand warmers got that warm thank you for the advice. I'll look into reptile warmers.

i think alotta peeps overthink the transport of their BP's and snakes for a short trip home from the show, store, FedEx hub, etc. basically...
1. IMO the #1 thing is safely securing your snake. the car has alotta nooks and crannies and an unsecured snake can get lost in it and hurt themselves: https://ball-pythons.net/forums/show...ehind-the-dash tie up the snake bag or securely seal the delicup lid and put them in a vented tub, cooler or other lockable container.
2. if u are warm and cozy in your car, so will you new snake that's being transported. i hope that your car heater and fan nowhere near approaching Death Valley 110-plus degree temps but a warm and comfortable ambient temps is all u need. no heat pack is necessary. that's only needed for box shipping through multiple time zones and/or climates when the snake has no heat source.
RIP Mamba
