i got a temp gun from the tempgun.com folks at the narbc show. Cheap unit but works great, small handy size.

Sure it woudl work to take your humididty readings.. I use the flukers thermo/hygro

this is a good place for a temp gun. http://harborfreight.com/ i had one when i was doing RC racing. i had to make sure my engines didn't get to hot.

Justcage i just ordered the flukers thermo/hygro. it says to put it half way down the cage in the description. does it mean for a snake? or should it be closer to the bottom?

for tempguns i'd stick with names like fluke,hart scientific, raytek (owned by fluke), amprobe,uei,cps, and cooper. these names have been around and make alot tools for the hvac industry. for humidity the ones from walmart for 15 bucks do great! remember tempguns read surface contact temps and those can be different than ambient air temps. your ambient air can be 80 and your surface temps 77,78 and vice versa in different parts of the cage/tub. i have alot of thermometers (laser,thermocouple,pen type) from working in hvac and to be honest i use the ones from walmart alot they can be a couple of degrees off but close enough for our purposes. to get less than 1 deg. true accuracy you need a thermistor or thermocouple type thermometer and fluke makes the cheapest i've seen at $169.00

For what it's worth, I don't use temp guns at all. In my opinion, a spot temperature taken by a temp gun that says 92 degrees on the "hot" side is worthless if at night when you're sleeping that "hot" side drops to 86 degrees.

Get a $15 digital thermometer that records high temp and low temp. Once a week, clear the settings and leave the enclosure alone for 24 hours. After 24 hours, check the temps, THEN check the HIGH and the LOW. If you're doing it right, they should all be the same.

Use the temp gun to entertain your friends.

And if you have a temp gun and you love it, good for you! ... Don't let some schmuck like me ruin your party.

Do you keep a digital therometer on every rack....or just 1 per room? or do you just go with the thermostat temps?

hey daniel i only have a 10x10 room with 7 different stats and around a dozen different thermometers in various racks/cages. since all my racks are on proportional stats like helix and herpstat, temp problems aren't really something you deal with alot. the quality of the stats maintains the correct temps 24/7, you still have to setup/check with some sort of thermometer but the proportional stats really do a fine job!

You'd be surprised at how many nights I am at my shop at 2am! This is only a part time gig for me, so I do my best work at night.

I keep 4 or 5 thermometers mounted on the walls around each room and then I do "spot" checks on the racks every so often. It's as easy as throwing a digital thermometer (I have about 20 spares) in an empty tub for 24 hours. But for the most part, my room temps are precisely controlled and I let the helix's do all the work for me. As long as the room temps are stable, the rack/heat tape temps are perfect!
