    Not enough belly heat, urgent.

    Hello guys,
I need urgent help regarding heating, I use habistat heat mat 11x11 inch 12w with habistat mat stat and habistat reptile radiator with habistat pulse stat to keep ambient temperature. Exo terra is raised on the bottom and when I put mat underneath with probe sandwiched in between and glass, I doesn't provide enough belly heat checking with my IR temp gun, the surface is very very thin layer of soil so he doesn't lay on glass when in the hide.

I plugged the mat without a stat, it raises to 120 deg Celsius and my BP starts thermo-regulating, but that's too dangerous, with a stat he climbs up to reptile radiator and sandwiches himself between rad and the guard!!!!

So for now I took the probe out and stuck it to the outside of heat mat, I switched off the rad too. I am freaking out, I had him for 5 days now and he hasn't settled yet due to temperature problem.

    Please please help.

PS: sorry for late replies I'm about to go to work.

Does the heat mat not have an adjustable thermostat?

    Hi,

The plan is to ignore the temp the thermostat is set to but to adjust it to the temperature it provides safely inside the hot side hide ( 90 to 92 f ). I always double check the glass surface temps as a secondary once the hot side hide gets to the right temp and reduce the amount of substrate if it is too hot.

Sounds like the thermostat isn’t working right? Don’t know if it’s because i’m paranoid, but i went with a higher end thermostat (Herpstat 2) to control my heat mat and CHE for my new baby ball. Temps are always spot on

From the picture I’ve seen on their website it looks like the temp only goes up to 92 degrees. That might not be enough to get the actual temp inside the tank to 90. Just a guess.

Hiya, thanks for quick response, yes that's the one what Jbabycsx posted, should I send it back and get better one, can you please advise me what one is better? Or do I modify existing heat may and the probe to achieve desired temperature?

I would go with a Jumpstart thermostat from Amazon. I have three of them and they work great. Especially for the price. It’s normal to have to set your thermostat to a higher temp to get the actual temp on the inside of the glass to 90.

If you want something you can probably buy locally and not have to wait on shipping these dimmers are available at Lowe’s or any big home improvement store. Just turn the dimmer until the temp is stable at 90 and it’s good to go. I use these as well.

https://imgur.com/a/Zba8v83an update: came home from work, the heat mat is heated to 60 °C and the substrate temp is 30 °C in hot hide, I don't know the glass temperature yet, I didn't want to move him, ambient temp is 26.4 °C,

Substrate temp is not what you’re looking for. You want to move the substrate and make sure the glass is at 90. If the glass is at 90 degrees then let the snake do the rest. If it wants 90 it will adjust the substrate from side to side to get to it.
