Tub Tips?

Hey, so my tub's dimensions are 40 x 20 x 6.125 inches. My heat mat is 10 x 20.75 inches. How much of the bottom do you want it to cover?

The UTH covers about 1/3 of the tub if I lay it vertically. If horizontally it covers about 1/2 but it doesn't touch the sides of the tub, only the middle.

I'm opting for vertically as 1/3 of the bottom seems right from what I've seen to create a proper gradient. What do you guys think?

When I used tubs I used the Hefty 52qts. I used s heat pads mounted to corrugated plastic and regulated by a dual output thermostat so I could have 1 side set to 78 degrees and the other side 88 degrees. That covered most of the bottom but left the perimeter in case of a heat emergency. I also used dog bowl hides and the temps and humidity were spot on. Being in Northern Vermont and using a 40B originally, my temps and humidity were things I battled with constantly so switching to the tub made all the difference for me.

To illustrate I used a different brand and size of tub but it still shows how I could get good surface contact with my regulated heat pad but not have to attach the pad to the tub. The probe is secured to the pad with a relief allowance so as not cause warping or a pressure point on the mat. The shallow depth of the tubs, the dog bowl hides and using 2 30-40 gallon size UTH to cover most of the 52qt tub floor meant that even when it was -20°f outside and I was experiencing tepid temps in my apartment, my snakes were adequately warm and humid. Really, the switch transformed snake keeping for me into a passion.

I feel the same way. Lots of folks think I’m nuts for setting up pvc cages with rhp for each of my snakes, but I like to watch them...even the ones that hide 85% of the time. The only reason Loki and Selene are in these tubs is for quarantine. Once that period is over, they’ll move into their new Reptile Basics cages.

I guess if someone just has one then it's not such an issue but for people like me who got up to 24 snakes ( at worst/best ) when you've got banks of vivs full of snakes there will always be a few climbing around ..so that's when vivs / tanks come into their own

Same here....I have 14 and will be 15 before too long. Most are bp’s but I regularly see the cornsnake and redtail boa.

^ I am also switching because I will be going on vacation this year and I want the care for my BP to be as easy and straightforward as possible for whoever is watching him. I won't be able to get someone to come mist the tank 3x a day.

I'd love to get a PVC enclosure someday, but my BP is only a pastel and I think he's beautiful but I'd save the expensive enclosures for my dream snake like a clown BP or carpet python.

Yeah , even my Royals are active in the evenings when I'm home .. they spend a surprising length of time climbing around branches .
