Re: Some thoughts on Reptile Prime

You could probably use this dry with aspen (how it comes out of the bag), but I would be hesitant to use both if the Reptile Prime was damp/wet, since it really does hold onto water. You could do something like a small tub of this in the enclosure to keep it separate from the aspen, depending on how large your cages and snakes are.

Re: Some thoughts on Reptile Prime

Also, here is some context on the bang for your buck with this stuff, as that was one of my concerns. I ordered 4 bags off Amazon since I have Prime shipping. With approximately 2.75 bags I filled:

    (5) 10 gallons
    (2) 4x2 PVC cages
    (1) 20L
    (2) Exo Terra 36x18 enclosures

I still have 1 full bag and a bit left over from another, so not bad at all. And I honestly probably put TOO MUCH in several of my enclosures, anywhere from 1-2 inches deep, with less under the hides. While this stuff does not expand like a brick of EcoEarth or ReptiChip since it's loose in the bag, there is still some expansion when it gets wet and absorbs water. So my recommendation is to start with less than you think you'll need, add water, and see where you stand after mixing. You can always add more.

Reptile prime is all I will ever use. I just finished the origional bag before Brian's picture was put on it. So the bag lasted me 2 YEARS! that is how well it holds up. Seriously...it's worth it's weight in gold. I'm thinking of even putting my pueblan on it but not sure since he is so much messier lol.

I have my honduran on it fully dry/no added water and it works great. He likes making his own exits to hides with mini tunnels and it keeps his messes more contained. At over 250 grams, he can leave a large mess when he feels like it, but it is just as easy to spot clean for him as it is for my BPs.

I've seen great reviews on this stuff but if it's just cocoa fiber how does it differ from expanding a brick of cocoa fiber. At half the cost?

completely different. Almost no dust. There is never a smell and it contains all the mess. I use Eco earth at work and there really is no comparison.
