    Soaking concerns

I'm understanding Mica's soaking behavior as building. Her temps as measured by digital temp gun are 78-87 so not too hot. I've checked for mites and since my guys live on paper towels it's easy to check all the time. Humidity in the rack is high enough they shed in one or two pieces. She should feel secure enough in the rack since this is her second year in it and she's eaten in the past (she's off food right now though). That leaves her building. I've been pairing her once a month since August.

My concern: she spends long days in her water bowl jacuzzi and then once in a while hops out onto damp paper towels that she flooded with her heft in the bowl. Will this lead to scale rot or other soggy snake problems?

Easy fix, remove that big water bowl and give her a small water dish.
Someone with experience will chime in and tell you if she could get scale rot or not. If the consensus is that she won't get scale rot, then let her have at it, she probably just likes to soak.

That's an idea. She actually doesn't soak normally so I'm hoping this is due to her building (and this wasn't a problem last year when she had the year off.)

I guess a more refined question would be: do others have the experience of a building female soaking to the point of detriment?

I think she may ovulate soon since I *think* I feel relatively large follicles, she's been bred since August, she's been off food recently and her first ovulation was in January of 2017 (I've heard a rumor that they tend to ovulate at a similar time of year in future seasons)

    Re: Soaking concerns

An update: Mica ended up ovulating on January 8th and just before that ceased her soaking behavior and hasn't touched her bowl since. Her scales seem fine and she'll have a shed soon anyway.

I may actually have 2 clutches this year, as Buttercup has just decided to follow suit (I think she's getting close as well). I'll trade water bowls so she has a more comfortable time of it.
