    Frozen rats shipping

Where do you all get frozen rats from? I need to switch my guy over to rat pups and I will need them shipped here. All the places I have looked at are a lot more expensive than I expected.

I use Big Cheese Rodent Factory out of Ft. Worth, Tx. Mostly cause it's 30 minutes away and I don't have to have my F/T shipped.

But I've heard good things about Rodent Pro and Perfect Prey as well. And I know that Cold Blooded Cafe is the cheapest I've found, but I'm hesitant to try them because they don't vacuum pack their F/T rats/mice so the quality may not be as good as other sellers.

Alex, you might check around & see if there are other snake-keepers in your area (or a herp society) that you could split a frozen order with to save money.
I've heard of herp societies doing that among members. To find other individuals in your area you might inquire thru vets (esp. exotic) offices too- many
vets have a bulletin board as well. (I'm no help, I'm nowhere near you & raise my own rodents.)

I use Rodent Pro. I wait for them to have a sale and then I bulk order and stick them in the deep freeze. The prices are pretty good compared to anything I can find locally, but the shipping is $30 (a flat shipping fee for a large box's worth). I just ordered a years's supply of mice and rats for our snakes, which didn't even fill the box but it was all I could reasonably order. If I had more snakes it would an even better deal. I figure is worth the $30 of not needing to run to the local reptile store regularly. The food came still very frozen on dry ice and well insulated, and they communicated very well with us on the progress of the order.

    I use perfect prey.

Pricing is good, customer service is excellent, packaging is top notch and quality of prey is awesome.

    Re: Frozen rats shipping

I’ve used Rodent Pro for several years because they consistently had the prey item sizes I needed. They do not vacuum seal, just put in freezer bags. As mentioned, they have flat rate shipping. I’ve never had a problem with them, though my last batch of rats had a strong smell to them - not off, just like the cages weren’t kept as clean as prior shipments.

I decided to try Cold Blooded Cafe for my last order and I’m pleased with the quality of the rodents. No strong odors and everybody is chowing down on them just fine. Prices were a bit cheaper than Rodent Pro for the items I ordered. They don’t vacuum seal either, rodents just come in freezer bags. They also have flat rate shipping.

I’ve also used Layne Labs in the past. Probably the cleanest rodents I’ve ever purchased. I swear they must live in a rodent resort. That said, expect prices to run accordingly and the shipping is high. Even so, it is still cheaper than buying live or f/t through any of the local shops...big box or mom and pop stores.

As to vacuum sealing, I sort and vacuum seal my rodents by serving size (rats) or in smaller batches (mice) to reduce freezer burn.

If you are on Facebook look for a local reptile-related group. Often you can find people who breed their own feeders that will sell off their excess.

I use Cold Blooded Cafe. As someone mentioned, they aren't vaccume sealed or individually wrapped, so they will only last a certain number of months in the freezer.

However, they are the cheapest I've ever seen! $30 flat rate shipping, shipped with tons of dry ice and insulation. Mine arrived frozen solid. They are clean, and good sizes.

If you only have 1 snake, ordering online can be a bit pricy still, though. Hey, just an excuse to get more, right?
