    Can snakes hear? Interesting article.

    So I read this.

    http://snakesarelong.blogspot.com/20...akes-hear.html

I think a while back it was asked if snakes could hear and the most resounding answer was that they had no ears.

    What are your thoughts?

I feel like we all got it 100% right. They can’t hear, they since vibrations. Humans do it too, we can hear without using our ears. There are headphones that vibrate ur jaw bone and u can hear from it. But as far as saying hello to a snake it can’t hear u. But it can tell ur vibrating the air around him

Good article...and I know when I crank up music my snakes all take notice. I think it's mostly the bass vibrations, & let's face it, none of them sing along, but
I wouldn't rule out that they have some limited hearing too. Not knowing IF they could hear me has never stopped me from talking to them anyway...& when
they're around my neck* perhaps it's reassuring to them somehow? (*safely, of course...not fully looped) I think it's easier to give the "short answer" though
to most people who ask, unless you have a long time to explain why they aren't completely deaf. Plus, if people consider them deaf, it gets a bit more sympathy-
I've had people tell me that when they yelled at a snake to leave their yard & it didn't, they killed it...& they seemed to feel at least a little bit of remorse when I
told them that snakes are deaf. Sometimes the short answer works better.

But my question is, is it actually hearing? There once was a famous piano player that was deaf, but he would pound the keys and play by vibrations from the piano without hearing it

Yes, it's still hearing... Some people are totally blind, others have such minimal vision they are "legally blind" despite having some limited eyesight. I think hearing
is the same...many folks are "hard of hearing" but not totally deaf. BTW, I listened to that sample music in the article, showing how a snake might "hear" a song....that made it very clear. If you skipped over that part, do check it out.

A couple days ago I watched an old W.C.Fields movie- a old man who was "hard of hearing" came into his store & proceeded to cause havoc. He could still hear
W.C. but only when an "ear trumpet" was used. Most people would have just called him deaf, even though he could still hear a little.
