The day I "lost" my ratsnake

I had just bought Noodle a new Exo-terra enclosure, she was only a couple months old at that point. I set it all up, put her in it, and then went to check on her and she was gone! I removed all the hides, then the foliage, then dug through the substrate, and finally thought maybe she got behind that decorative styrofoam background . . and there she was! Little stinker! I removed it-- looks better without it anyway.

2 BP's, one ratsnake, 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 small caged birds, 7 chickens, and a toddler in a pear tree

That's a snake for ya! And you can tell (by her pupils at 6 o'clock) that she's sleeping happily...while visions of hopper mice dance in her head...

Silly snake! One of our BP's did the same thing. I went to check on him but he was nowhere to be found. I called my husband in a panic thinking he had escaped. I then decided to check the foam background, just in case, and there he was. I have no idea how he got behind there. He was about 500 grams at the time and there was no easy way to access the foam. Needless to say the foam came out of our other two Exo Terra enclosures.

Snakes are hard-wired to find niches to snooze in...just like they automatically find the ONLY 1" hole in the lining under your sofa or bed...or go right under the "crawl-
space" of your kitchen cupboards, and magically disappear into all upholstered furniture cushions. It's what they do for a living.

Yes they do! I remember when I was holding my daughter's BP at my desk, and suddenly she dashed into my partner's brand new expensive wireless speaker with a hole in it that I didn't know was there until she went in it! He was out of town, and I tried everything to get her out of that speaker before he returned. Finally I put the speaker in a large plastic bin and went to bed and set my alarm to midnight. Sure enough she had ventured out of it and was sitting on top of it. I grabbed her quick and put her away. Speaker needed to be re calibrated but otherwise okay. . . and smarty snake-- next time I held her and sat at my desk, she went right over to where that speaker was, remembering it as the best hiding place ever.

She actually was annoyed, I think. She looked perfectly happy to have found that spot.

I'll bet! She wouldn't have been sleeping in there if she didn't love it! She felt safe (with "back pressure"!) You big meanie! (I'd have removed the foam too...)
