I lost my dog and my friend, MAX

What a beautiful soul. Max was 140 pounds of purebred German Shepherd with such a gentle heart. He was a lover, not a fighter!

He was nine years old and one of his rear legs stopped working. The vet said wait and see because most of the causes were terminal. The next day his other hind leg stopped working. A neighbor had to help me lift him into my car on a litter borrowed from the vet. After a few x-rays, the vet told me that there was a mass growing in his abdomen that looked like it was pinching the nerves to his legs (sort of like carpel tunnel in the wrist). He could operate on Max but his condition was probably terminal and Max would be more of an invalid that a happy dog.

Max and I waited five hours in the radiology room at the vet for my son to get there (it was actually "his" dog). They gave my son an additional 90 minutes sitting on the floor with Max to say goodbye to the pup. Max was using my son's thigh as a pillow when the drugs entered his system. The ending was peaceful for Max but DAMN I hated to say goodbye!

Sorry to vent. I guess I have to change my profile info and my signature now. :-(

Oh gosh, I'm so very sorry.

I have always loved German Shepherds. My current one is 4 years old, a long haired one.

My soul dog, Vic, was also a German Shepherd. Lost him at the age of 10 years old. To that tumor they tend to have growing next to their stomach. It ruptured.
They have so many genetic issues, its sad. Lot of cancers, too.
I always said I would be composed during the final good bye. For the dogs sake.
Instead I completely and utterly fell apart into a million pieces. I can't even talk about it much.

I'm so sorry. I can't even find the right words, but my thoughts are with you and your son.

Thanks folks. I learned as a young lad to remember the sweet memories and not to to dwell on the memories that can gut you. Your thoughts and prayers are deeply appreciated.

    Dadofsix,

So sorry. It's always so difficult to put down a good friend like Max.

I am glad you are already focusing on the positives. You gave him a great life and did the right thing for him in the end, when he needed you too.

He will always be in your heart and his memories in your mind.

    Keep your chin up buddy.

    You are in my thoughts.

    David

I'm so sorry for your loss, dadofsix...you made a hard decision for your buddy Max & most likely the same call I'd have made under those dismal circumstances.
It's often kinder not to put an older dog thru major surgery, especially when it's only buying a little time...I'm all for quality of life, whether it's mine or my beloved
pets. Dogs have so much intelligence & personality that it's very hard to lose them from our family circle...when time passes the pain of their loss may ease but
we always love & miss them. Max will live on in your hearts...rather than in pain & disability. Life is pretty much a "fatal condition" for us all...eventually. Be very
grateful that Max was part of your life for as long as he was...Rest in Peace, Max.

Trust me, I know how you're feeling...I currently have 2 older dogs, but I've previously shared my life with other wonderful canine companions that I eventually had
to say goodbye to...and just reading about you losing Max is making me .

Sorry for your loss. Dogs really are man's best friend. I fear my favorite Aussie is entering her last days soon as she is 12 and is starting to have all sorts of problems. Just trying to spend all the time I can with her while she's here.
