Whatever Happened To the Dewey Decimal System?

as the thread title states. admittedly i don't remember the last time i've used the Dewey Decimal System in a library. i usually reserve a book or whatever i need online or from my phone, then i just go straight to checkout to pick it up. but anyways, i went to the vet the other day and then i remembered that i needed a book for a book report. so i stopped by a nearby library w/o using the aid of technology and it is just utterly crazy how they're all organized!

so many books by the same author strewn about multiple random sections!

this section was titled "Readers" w/ books by Dr. Seuss that include...
-- The Cat In The Hat
    -- The Foot Book
-- Would You Rather Be A Bullfrog?
-- I am Not Going To Get Up Today!
    -- Book of Colors
-- The Shape of Me and Other Stuff

then this section is titled "Picture Books" and it has...
    -- The Kings Stilts
    -- Batholomew and The Oobleck

this section is for "Feelings" and has...
-- What Was I Scared Of?

^ and how is that different from the "Life Issues" section?

    this one has...
    -- The Butter Battle Book
    -- Daisy-Head Mayzie
-- Oh The Places You'll Go

i dont' remember what section this was but it's kinda redic that it's in it's own separate section...

there were also other sections i took pix of but i guess i deleted them. but those sections included:

    Science and nature
    -- The Lorax

    Stories
    -- Yertle The Turtle

    so confusing! WTF!
    RIP Mamba

Ugh... From what I understand, this is one of the new trends a lot of libraries are adopting. The district I work for actually had a planning company we hired at one point, to help us plan our next steps to expand and improve our services, who wanted us to adopt what would probably be a similar system- more like a bookstore, not a traditional library. This proposal was met with a *very* negative reaction from us library staff, and the company was fired.

As confusing as the Dewey decimal system looks on the surface, it's really much more practical not only for staff, but for patrons as well.

I had no idea...you've made me want to check out the library here, to see what they're using? I don't go in that often, but when I do, I'll let you know.

I love the way libraries smell. They should have a scratch & sniff section with all the best smelling books.

Our local library has sold off most of it's collection.
It seems to now consider itself a free internet hub.
