    herpstat trouble?

I've had these things for less than a week so bear with me but I check my tanks and they all seem off. I set Lily (my ball's) herpstat to 90 and it was reading at the right temp. and then I held my temp gun on the probe and it read 95. So then I checked Wilbur's hot spot and the herpstat was giving me grief about it being more than three degrees cold but my temp gun says 89.9 all over the his basking rock. (that is the rock under his bulb NOT a hot rock). Peppermint is all squished against her cold side. I only set hers to 80. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm mainly worried because I put bigger bulbs in all the lamps(from 60s all around to 75s and 100s for Lily) because I that I could trust the silly things. oh and the wiring on one of Ringo's bulbs was been fried so he was without heat today. Isn't owning snakes fun?

Yes it is...but the technology, not so much... (someone else will have to advise you, I've never used Herpstat).

Anyone have a Herpstat and willing to help me trouble shoot? Now my adult corn seems to have damaged the probe by sitting on it. He is rather large ... for a corn snake.

    Re: herpstat trouble?

Is there any way to arrange the probe out of the snakes reach? WOuld hate for them to sit on it/make a mess on it and it cause the lamps to drop or jump temps.. I have never had problems with my herpstat.. maybe reach out to spyder robotics if you cant get an answer here? They were helpful when I had questions..

    Re: herpstat trouble?

Your not giving any info. The Herpstat isn’t the problem.
    Whats the Heat Source?
Where is your Probe in relation to the heat source?
    What kind of enclosure?

ok All lamps sit on the screen lids
    Ringo (adult corn):
    55 long
probe on ground next to hot hide (used to be inside but he was smashing it.)
    lamp w/ 75 w bulb
    set to 80 degrees

    Lily (adult ball)
    55 square?
probe on top of hide, under lamp
    lamp w/ 100 w bulb
    set to 90 degrees

    Peppermint (sub adult corn)
    20 long
    probe inside hot hide
    lamp w/ 75 w bulb
    set to 80 degrees

    Wilbur (baby hognose)
    20 long
probe on top of hot hide
    lamp w/ 75 w bulb
    set to 90 degrees

    Re: herpstat trouble?

You need your probes to hang about 1/3 down from heat source. Do not put them inside hides or on tank floors or on a surface like the top of a hide. What you need is a Laser Thermometer to check surface temps. EXAMPLE: my herpstat is set to 94 but the Hot Hide Roof measures 90. The heat will radiate off that Hide into the snake. If your Tstat probe is hidden in the hide it wont register correctly and the hide roof could be 100. Another thing is all Glass tanks have drafts/loose heat etc.. if you havent already, cover 3 sides with Foam insulation board or cardboard. Its also hard to hang a probe inside a tank without squeezing or pinching the wire. Be careful not to cut it, and also find a way (silicone/Hot glue) to keep the wire in place so the probe cant fall further inside the tank. Maybe cut the screened lid enough for the probe to fit threw, then when it hangs 1/3 down Silicone the wire to the screen so the probe doesnt slip inside to floor.
The key is to check temps with a laser and set the herpstat accordingly.
Also cover the screen lid with tinfoil or plexiglass except for where your heat lamps or ceramic heaters are placed. This will help cool side/ambient.

    Re: herpstat trouble?

I personally have my probe secured almost at the bottom but not quite touching the ground. My Herpstat us set to 82 (I only provide ambient temp). I also have an Acurite thermometer/hydrometer inside the terrarium that double checks the temp.
