I just wish vets gave better advice ..

Just seen a new tv series called Inside the Vets .. episode 10 featuring a Royal with horrendous burns along its tummy ... long deep wound with Aspen stuck inside the affected area .. the owner said it had been lying on its heatmat ...
The vet never asked about a stat which seemed odd - she just suggested swapping to a overhead guarded bulb ....again no mention of a thermostat...

Treatment was two injections ... one painkiller and one antibiotic with the owner bathing twice daily to try and wash the Aspen out ..

On the second visit 3 days later a different vet asked the owner if the heat mat was covered now !?
He just said that they'd turned the temperature down !!!

I just wish they'd stressed to the owners how important thermostats are to regulate heat mats/bulbs .

They injected the Royal about 10" down from the head and put the needle straight in and a long way ... I half expected the needle to come out the other side ! I also thought they'd go in shallow kinda under the skin a little...

I presume they know where snake's heart and lungs are situated !!

On the way out the vet jokingly said to the snake " it's a pity you didn't say you were too warm !!!!???!!

    Aghhhhhhhhhj !!!!

WOW, my sister is a vet Tec and the best in my book , and a long time reptile lover my sister had an albino Burmese python back gosh I was 13 so 22 years ago and all other kinds she rescues birds from bad breeder all really deformed a one leg , a half face, and one with messed up wings, she would have flipped if a vet handle any animal like that in front of her remember like doctors , vets are not all equal in their knowledge and compassion..But so sorry for the owners that is beyond a waste of money they would have got better advice here for FREE..

Sadly there is very little on tv any more that is truly factual and educational - and that includes the news.

For what it's worth, I wish vets at least had EXPERIENCE keeping each kind of animal that they treat...that would really help to cut down on some of the ridiculous
advice they've been known to give pet owners. They're trained to focus on the medical solution when many times it's as much about the husbandry, if not entirely. (of course, "medical" solutions make more money than advice...and they usually take less time than talking over all the relevant issues)

Well if you're watching a half an hour tv show, im sure they cut down the actual conversation to however long they needed it to be for tv. Doesn't mean the vet didn't touch on the subject. Just my two cents...

    Hi

It's an hour long program and they probably spent a good 10 to 12 minutes on the snake over two visits ..

I actually considered that possibility but they chatted so much about all manner of things .. I'd guess if the vet had had a go at them or insisted they got a thermostat then the producers would have shown that as they want 'good' telly ..

You make a very valid point of course !!
