The rodent breeding is probably what got him noticed, as a colony of 400 is going to smell... well.. rodenty simply because they can't go more than about 15 minutes without dropping a turd. It would be a 24/7 job just keeping up with cleaning them, never mind 130+ snakes and keeping a full-time job to pay the bills on top of it. You can keep that many snakes without them stinking; it's work spot cleaning that many every day but it's doable.

    Edit:
here's an update: the man relinquishes rights to the animals and they are looking for new home placements. can someone in SA pickup a few Clowns for me? story and pix here: https://www.ksat.com/news/man-at-cen...avoids-20k-fee

Man at center of massive SA snake seizure relinquishes ownership, avoids $20K fee

SAN ANTONIO - The man at the center of the snake and rodent seizure in San Antonio earlier this month has relinquished ownership of his 136 pythons and more than 400 rodents to Animal Care Services.

The animals were taken from a home in the 500 block of Katyon Ave. off Rigsby Ave. on Sept. 5.

As part of the agreement, the man will not have to reimburse ACS for the impounding, care and feeding of the snakes and rodents -- an estimated $20,000.

ACS is currently in touch with several animal rescue groups and trying to find suitable places to take the animals.

Twenty-nine snakes were found inside the house in glass cages with no utilities, and 107 others were discovered in plastic storage bins in a padlocked metal shed in the backyard, according to ACS spokeswoman Lisa Norwood.

A little stuck shed on some but mostly the snakes shown look fine though we obviously cannot tell about cleanliness, temperatures & other husbandry issues.
Photos do not easily show respiratory infections or mites or filthy under-sized cages...& not sure if he was in violation of local laws either?

I'm trying hard NOT to jump to the conclusion that because these are snakes & rats AND a large #of them, that the owner was singled out. HOPE that's not the case.

oh, I wasn't asking if there were retics, my response was like 'but there are retics in the photos' then it was clarified it was the mislabeling of the original header pic.

Was there ever an update to this story?
I didn't think the snakes looked that bad either.

I guess if "quite a few are ill" when seized is true, the care was pretty bad.

A few snakes in the short slideshow had stuck shed.

I guess the conditions were probably pretty shabby- though it's weird to me how on earth anyone found out about it LOL. Someone in the neighborhood must be really on top of things!

I agree, we kinda have to take their word for it that many are ill*..."stuck shed" isn't the same thing though. *Assuming that's the case, I'm happy for the snakes to
have been removed & helped. And I have a hunch they were kept in very undersized bins too, but I don't know if that violates any local laws or not.

As for how people found out, I'm sure the smell from the big rodent operation was an issue. And they reported that passersby were trying to buy some of the evidence
(the snakes) so the owner probably had been selling locally...maybe he had made some enemies? (one is all you need...)
