    Safe Wood?

I want to make a basking platform for my beardie. I've got a whole lot of random bits of wood. However, I just read that all types of softwood are dangerous for bearded dragons (and all reptiles)? Is this true? I don't think I have any hardwood.

For some reason I kept seeing "Safe Word" not "safe wood". LOL Geez I need coffee.

I have never heard of that before, but I am not saying they are wrong either. Almost everyone I know who keeps beardies uses treated wood, like drift wood is a popular one. Other people take outside tree branches, cut them up and bake them in the oven for a few minutes to kill any bugs hidden inside. Whatever you plan to use from outside, I would either bake it or use diluted bleach and dip it for a few seconds.

What works for me, and it might work for you, are hammocks and bricks. Bricks are dirt cheap and great for climbing and keeping the lizard's nails short. Beardies love hammocks. Those you can DIY or the 3 pack one sold in Amazon or Pet Supermarket works great for 40 gallon breeder or larger tank.

Alright, we have a dead plum tree on our property. Is plum wood safe for beardies/reptiles? I've read yes from some sites and no from others. We don't use pesticides.

    Re: Safe Wood?

The only woods that are readily available that I would not use is pine (sap if fresh and aromatics) and cedar (aromatics). Cedar aromatics are irritating for reptiles at best, and can be deadly at worst. This goes for cedar shavings, too...which is why it’s popular for pet bedding due to insect repellant qualities.
