    Finally cut off!

I wasn't sure which room to post this, but I am sure some of you will be able to relate to this... Have you ever been cut off, meaning told you can not have any more snakes in the house? Maybe you've been told by your spouse or your roommate or even your parents! How did you handle the news you were given and did you really stop bringing home snakes??

    Re: Finally cut off!

Lol sounds about right. I've been hardcore eyeballing a GORGEOUS pair of granite/het IJ carpets, my girlfriend didn't cut me off but she did make mention of the fact that she feels like the time I devote to the snakes is starting to infringe on time I spend with her. Which made me think and reconsider adding something too hastily anyways. So I'm grateful that I have her to help keep me in check in a nice way.

My fiance recently told me he doesn't mind when I bring snakes home because once they're set up they're pretty cheap to keep.

I take that as an open invitation to bring home as many as I want.

My hubs said no more. Not because he doesn't want them, but because we don't have anymore room being in an apartment. Once we have a house I can have more lol.

    Re: Finally cut off!

Yeah, Katie (my fiancé) said no more.

At the time, I had 5 tanks setup. Two for 3 leopard Geckos (2 females get along great and one female, well, not so much), one for Shayna (Albino Spider BP), one for Figment (Hypo Lavender Corn), and one for Frank (BTS).

However, I managed to to talk her into letting me get a Female BCI (Behira) and then a scaleless corn snake (Solana). The latter was our anniversary present this year, but the former was pretty much all me wanting. I think I pushed a little too hard and it bit me in the butt as Katie still isn't completely happy about having a BCI, much less a female. However, all is well in the David/Katie household, despite the 8 reptiles in 7 tanks and the 5 dogs!

Getting a Boaphile tank stack (3 6X2' cages and 4 3X2' cages all stacked on top of each other) has made everyone happier. The animals are happier and it's easier to control temps and humidity. I am happier because it's easier to control temps and humidity, everyone is in one spot and taking up a lot less space, and there's room in the stack for everything I've ever wanted.

She has completely put her foot down at this point. No more room in the house for tanks. I have agreed with her and put my foot down as well though.

Space aside, I am at my limit of time and energy to be able to take care of everyone, AND still enjoy the hobby and everyone of my reptiles individual personalities. I am still able to interact with everyone and keep everything clean and properly heated, etc. with minimal effort. I think more animals would equate to diminishing returns.

Additionally, I have every animal I've ever wanted (realistically) to keep in the hobby. I love Corn snakes, and now I have two, including a gorgeous scaleless motley sunglow (with red factor) and Figment who's a beast of a corn snake - over 5FT and 650G. I have my albino BP, that I have wanted since I was 10. I have a Blue Tongue Skink and adore him and his "charm." I have 3 Leopard Geckos, all with different personalities and morphs. Finally, I have Behira, my female BCI who's growing into a gentle giant.

What more could I ask for?

So, yes, Katie has said NO MORE, but I am totally on board with that.

I have a few more on the way but my wife and I came to an agreement that 30 snakes out on display is the most reasonable limit for us.

Won't happen - I own my home and I am "the wife" so what I say goes.

That said I do try to keep the number manageable and always have a space available in QT for a rescue - because we get called a lot.

Besides them being escape artist what's not to love? They come in so many colors and patterns, don't have major temp and humidity requirements, never refuse food, fairly cheap to obtain, and only need mice when full grown. I literally have a wall of snakes in my den.

    Re: Finally cut off!

I've been "cut off" from getting more snakes a few times by the S/O. Right after snakes 2, 4 and 8. Once we moved into our new house the moratorium was lifted and I quickly added 3 more critters. That gives me a grand total of 11 snakes which is a good place for me to stop collecting more animals and really enjoy the ones I have.
