    !happy world snake day!!

it's World Snake day u guys! WOOHOO!!

it's that time of the year again where we celebrate our passion and love of one of the most misunderstood animals in the world! on World Snake Day, snake lovers and herpers of all kinds put extra emphasis on the education of snakes. What will u do today? Will u teach someone some kool and interesting facts about snakes? Will you let someone unfamilar w/ snakes hold your BP? let's edcuate and celebrate!

    here's some nice articles:

this article highlights some of Michigan's native snake species - https://www.clickondetroit.com/all-a...nd-in-michigan
They're scaly, slithery and sassy. They're snakes.

In Michigan, about 18 species of snakes are found and they are actually very important to our ecosystem.

Snakes can survive in a variety of habitats such as forests, grasslands, lakes, rivers, marshes, farms, and cities. Seventeen of these species are non-venomous, with the only venomous snake being the Easter Massasauga Rattlesnake.

Snakes are one of the most misunderstood and feared of all animals in Michigan. Snakes are fascinating members of Michigan’s wildlife community that, if given the chance, will avoid contact with humans. Snakes do not chase, attack, or otherwise, approach humans.
    here's one from Georgia - http://news.georgiaaquarium.org/stor...ar-celebration
It’s World Snake Day! If your first thought sounds something like, “Why in the world would we dedicate an entire day to snakes?” You’re probably not alone. However, snakes play a crucial role in our ecosystem, even if the thought of them makes your skin crawl, and we think that is something worth talking about, understanding, and celebrating.

    Debunking: Poisonous vs. Venomous
Did you know snakes technically aren’t poisonous, only venomous? If an animal is poisonous, the toxin that is harmful to you is on their skin or tongue. Making them harmful to the touch. If an animal is venomous, it’s their bite that is the problem. The animal will inject the toxin into their victim either as prey or a self-defense mechanism against a predator. There is no complete way to identify whether a snake is venomous or not.

Should I be worried about the snake in front of me?
There are certain things to look for if you stumble upon one on a hike or in your back yard. The majority of venomous snakes in North America are “pit vipers” meaning they have heat-sensing pits beneath their eyes. Venomous snakes will normally have triangular or arrow-shaped heads with slits for pupils. If you aren’t able to identify any of these features on a snake you encounter, you should not interact with it. Occasionally snakes without these features are venomous. If you do come across a snake that you are sure is venomous, do not attempt to kill or capture it. Instead, back away slowly while watching it and move yourself, family, and pets to a safe area.

Snakes are a form of natural pest control
Without snakes, the rodent population would sky-rocket, creating a ripple effect on the ecosystem. The Cape Snake Conservation refers to mice, rats and other rodents as a major threat to global food production and act as reservoirs for disease. That’s a pretty good reason to have snakes around.
and here's one from all the way in India - https://news.webindia123.com/news/ar...6/3390267.html
Removing people's fears and illusions about snakes is one of the aims of World Snake Day observed in the centenary year old Mysuru zoo on Monday .

After celebrating World Giraffe Day recently with active participation of visitors, the Mysuru Zoo is now celebrating World Snake Day on July 16. The zoo aims to educate people on snakes and throw light on the most unscientific myths about them.

Balasubramaniam, popularly known as 'Snake' Shyam, a herpetologist in Mysuru, was given talk on snakes at the zoo day.

In front of snake enclosures, information boards and fun facts on snakes was on the display whole day . zoo authorities have urged visitors and snake enthusiasts to make use of the opportunity and visit the zoo.

Through a press release here Monday said there are over 3,000 different varieties of snakes. World Snake Day was observed for the cause of conservation of the sometimes dangerous but mostly misrepresented reptile. Snakes live on every continent except Antarctica and can vary from 32-ft long pythons to tiny vine snakes.

Only about a fourth of all snakes are venomous and all of them would much rather avoid human contact if they could. Maximum snake bite incidents occur when humans inadvertently step on or otherwise disturb the peaceful creatures, the zoo said.

India, with all its typecast of snake charmers, is home to only four venomous snake species but many destructive superstitions and myths about snakes. Conservationists are hoping that the events of the day can help remove people's fears and illusions about snakes, and help them gain recognition as a marvellous adaptable apex species, the release added.

World Snake Day can be used as a tool to educate and inform the people about how to deal with snakes, whom to call, resources available, and other information.

    Happy World Snake Day everyone!
