Unhappy Humidty too high in house for the summer... :(

    Just a concern here...

It's summer in Ohio and the humidity in our home ranges from 40%-60%. We keep several different types of snakes, but humidity has become an issue for the warmer weather ones (W. Hognose and KS Boa). We have already taken the precautions of using the tiniest water bowls on the cool side, using fans, etc. but to little avail. All of my snakes in are in PVC enclosures of varying sizes.

Should we be concerned about their humidity levels if there is no wet substrate or condensation? Are they at risk of getting ill? The highest I've seen in their tanks is around 50%. If I should be concerned, what is recommended to lower the humidity for them?

Thank you for any and all help.

Re: Humidty too high in house for the summer... :(

Right now the average humidity in my home is around 50%, now I’ve only kept ball pythons since moving here five years ago. But I kinda love it, I keep in tanks. And right now they shed without any boosting what so ever. No moss, no humidifier. In the winter I always play it safe and add moss, but I love love summer for the humidity. As far as the Kenyan and the hognose, I’m not sure of their exact husbandry needs, but for my balls it’s working out great.

Why do you feel those are bad levels...?

i think you are totally fine with where you are. 40% is even too low. 60% is fine lost my tanks sit around there or mid 50s

i bump to 70 plus for shed

Is that even okay with Western Hognose and Kenyan Sand Boas?

I do not own those snakes.

What do most care sheets say? Breeders? Etc

I live in Ohio too! The humidity can be soo high!!! It is great for my BP though. Misting is only like once a week
    for me.

About your question, I actually have never owned those kinds of snakes so I'm not much of any help...sorry

The hognose will be fine. Higher humidity doesn't cause them issues as long as they are kept clean.

The KSB should be ok as well. Remember that your house is cooler than your KSB's enclosure - the hot spot should be 90-95*F with a cool side of 80*F - so the relative humidity in your KSB's enclosure will be quite a bit lower than that of your house.

Thank you all for your input. Everyone seems to be okay now and the humidity hasn't been as high lately. I will keep an eye on them.

Re: Humidty too high in house for the summer... :(

Food for thought...I'm currently setting up my new pvc enclosure and taking temps. I'm at 70% humidity with only substrate and bone dry Reptichip substrate. No water in the dish. My other (smaller pvc enclosure) has always had high humidity levels (70s - 80s) and never any wetness or moisture buildup. Always a great shed. I don't think it's too much of an issue as long as their is no condensation buildup. Just my two cents and I've heard breeders mention the same.
