    Enclosure size question

I have a new young ball python which I currently have in a 24 x 18 x 12 exoterra glass tank. I am going to order new Animal plastics T10 tanks (48 x 24 x15) I was wondering if that would be too big to put him in now or would he be fine as long as put enough hiding spots in the new enclosure. He is currently about 2ft long approx 120 grams.

If he stops eating, start showing stress than you will know it's too big.

Sounds a little big for a guy that small, IMO. I am not a big believer in you cannot put a snake in a large tank, etc. My BP is in a 6X2.' I put her in a 4X2' when she was about 400G, with lots of hides.

If you provide a lot of hides and a good temp gradient (a given), he could be okay. Like Deborah said, if he stops eating, then you know.

The other variable is that a T10 will do a much better job of controlling temps and humidity than an exoterra glass tank. So I understand wanting him in there ASAP.

I would try it with a bunch of appropriate sized hides that are all identical. My BP, an adult, has 3 hides on the hot side. One on the hot spot (89F), one at about 85F, and another at about 83-84F. She also has one on the cool side (about 80F) as well as a big water bowl there.

I would probably just alternate hides for the length of the tank. One in the back, then a few inches further down the tank, one in the front, etc. Make the little guy feel as secure as possible.

Additionally, let him settle in for a week or two without handling. Only go in to clean and feed. I would also wait at least 7 days after move to feed and don't worry if he doesn't eat then. I would worry if he skips the next meal.
