Hide box
So I got a 7' red tail and I was wondering about ideas for a hide. I cut a hole in an 18qt dishwashing bucket and she's about as cramped as a horse in tighty whities. I was thinking about a car board box but I don't like the idea of the smell and having it suck out the humidity and the fact that it looks cheap. Any crafty people out there I'd appreciate your help

I've seen people go to their local Garden centre, pick up a large flower pot, have it upside down in their enclosure and open up the top (technically the bottom of the pot)
How they break the tops, I have no idea, but maybe someone on here can tell you.
I personally use a Large Exo Terra Tortoise Cave and have some of the entrance covered with fake leaves, so not as exposed. Definitely a lot pricier but it suited my overall look I was going with so I went with it.
Would love to hear other ideas though.

I use Reptile Basic jumbo hides for my 8 ft retic, 6 ft boa and 7 ft boa and they got plenty of room. http://www.reptilebasics.com/jumbo-hide-box
Can also go to a restaurant supply store and buy a bus tub or Home Depot and get a cement mixing tub.
Here is a pic to give you an idea. This is Caesar my 8 ft retic and you can see he has plenty of room in there. He only uses about half the hide.

Re: Hide box
They're sold out of the jumbo size lol but I'm gonna check back into it. I'm gonna have to look into that garden pot idea though sounds interesting

Yeah I'm a fan of the hides Sauzo refered too. Very good reviews on those.
I forgot why guys were making holes from the top, can't remember the reasoning behind it, but I probably should of added that you can simply do it the normal way and have a front facing entrance. Maybe just break it with a hammer since the Entrance doesn't need to be perfect and any sharp parts just sand down.

Re: Hide box
Maybe it simulates the burrow they would normally be climbing down into? Idk, but I'm thinking about building one directly into the tank

Never seen guys break the bottoms of flower pots to make hides. Most of the time i've just seen them laid on the side and then just overhang some plastic greenery over it. It would work but not sure how something like terra cotta clay pots would be to clean snake piss off of. I use them for the potted plants in my snake cages but they never piss or poop on them. They are fairly porous and i have been told they are awesome for plants as they 'breath' unlike plastic or ceramic pots.
