Snake in the Outfield Stops Baseball Game

over the weekend, a snake slithered onto centerfield of a San Antonio minor league baseball game. the baseball game was briefly stopped for the ground maintenance guys to "catch" the snake. here's the vid:

    here's a story on it:
Snake in the outfield grass causes wild delay at minor league game
Have you ever had to encounter one of your biggest fears at the least convenient moment? That could have been the case for any number of people attending Friday night’s Double-A game between the hometown San Antonio Missions (Padres affiliate) and the visiting Frisco RoughRiders (Rangers).

In the top of the eighth inning, a snake literally slithered its way into the outfield grass as play was going on. Once the snake was spotted, the action at Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium was stopped and then delayed for several minutes while members of the grounds crew attempted to contain it and remove it.

As you’ll see in the video below, that was no easy task. But hats off to the six crew members who eventually got the job done.

    Crazy.

Perhaps the best part of the video is the five crew members who took off right away and left that one guy behind to carry the bucket containing the snake.

According to Missions center fielder Michael Gettys, it was the fans who first spotted the sneaky snake and got his attention.

“I heard someone from the stands yell, ‘There’s a snake in center field!’ but I thought they were just missing around.” Gettys told MiLB.com. “I think a couple pitches went by and then after the out, I just kind of looked over to my right … and I just saw it. That was it.”

The team says snakes have been known to hang around the ballpark, but this is the first time one actually ventured on to the field.

could anyone ID this snake? is it a python? a colubrid? it looks paradox. whatta shame that the snake reportedly died. it was whacked by some garden tools afterall. it was periscoping and just trying to enjoy the game too.
    RIP Mamba

I saw this too, but hadn't heard they killed it... Stupid people. I've been trying to figure out what kind it is also, but photos are not very clear. Maybe a TX rat snake?
    Whatever it is, it's harmless.

They do...but mostly how to kill it. Remember they still allow & revel in rattlesnake roundups...which is nothing but bloodthirsty torture of snakes.

My favorite part was the line in the commentary "Are you kidding me? I have never seen a snake on the field. I've heard of snakes on a plane. That wasn't the greatest movie in the world..." hahahaha!!

I can't ID the snake either. Sucks that it had to die, but I'm not surprised. That tomahawk chop the guy came in with with that garden tool made me think they were gonna kill it on the field. Ugggh

Re: Snake in the Outfield Stops Baseball Game

It looks to me like the white spots are just the reflection of the light off its scales, so its probably either a texas rat or a black rat snake, or maybe a natural hybrid.

Everyone near me has been sending me pics of black rats they've seen around their yards lately, and it's a bunch. And not the younger ones, either. Big pretty noodles.
