A sad day indeed
I got my first bearded dragon, Delilah, 5 years ago from petco as a tiny baby, she was the first reptile I got since meeting my gf and getting her into reptiles as well. Over these years she has grown into not only a beautiful lizard, but a part of my family as well.
She has always been a great eater, and never had any health issues, so when I awoke to discover her gasping and gurgling this morning, I was confused and horrified. My first guess was a respiratory infection, but her conditions are warm and dry enough that such a thing seems unlikely. My normal vet was not open, so after calling around I found a veterinary urgent care that sees exotics, and rushed her there. This vet seems well versed in bearded dragons, and could tell that Delilah did indeed have fluid in her lungs, and after an x ray feels that it is most likely heart failure causing this fluid build up. Needless to say, I'm shocked, because Delilah has always eaten well, but I've kept her weight under control and she eats a healthy diet. The vet said that sometimes this happens to beardies regardless of diet and care, and thinks that giving her medications to reduce the fluid build up may extend her life. She is now going to be on a round of batril in case it is just an infection and has been given a dose of the diuretic to help clear her lungs, depending on how it goes she may need to be on it for life.
Needless to say, it's been a terrible day, and the prospect of losing a member of my family has crushed me. Just goes to show that you can do everything right but sometimes animals just die.

Oh man that sucks. I feel for you. Really do as i got a beardie too and i LOVE her. She is hands down my little buddy over any of my other reptiles. i got her as a 6 week old baby from Rainbow Dragons and have had her over 5 years. We went through learning about laying eggs together lol. She laid 2 clutches of 23 and 22 eggs and we both were stressing haha. I think i ran to Home Depot and bought about 6 different size tubs and play sand trying to make her a lay box. We got through it though. I always look forward to her in the morning as she is always there looking up at me to say 'good morning dad'.
Hoping your beardie pulls through. I couldnt imagine losing Harley and would be heartbroken.
Harley is a chubster though. She is overweight and the vet has told me that a few times lol. At her last weigh in, she was about 680 grams which I'm told a beardie her size should be around 500 grams. To give you an example of her queen chubbiness, here she is being not happy that i stole all her blankets to throw in the wash lol.
But again, here's to praying your little booger gets better quickly.

Re: A sad day indeed
Hang in there brother. It sucks; as you say, we can do everything right, and sometimes bad things happen.
Unfortunately, part of having pets is the risk of, and ultimately, losing them.
Focus on what you can do for her now and that you have, and will always, do your best for her.
Keeping you both in my thoughts.

Thanks everyone, it's nice to be able to talk to others who understand how much a reptile can mean to someone. Most of the people I know and work with don't understand... They are fur baby lovers, and don't think reptiles are on the same level.
@ sauzo: damn... that beardie almost looks like she's getting annoyed waiting for her platter of deep fried dubias to arrive!
Delilah weighed in at 480g today, but she was once up to 620g. I had to stop feeding her as much and cut out superworms from her diet and provided a bit less fruit and more greens... I'm hoping the short period of time she was at that weight wasn't the cause of this.

I'm so sorry to hear about Delilah being so sick...beardies are adorable! I had one (and Spike was a true rescue) many years ago...I still miss him cuddling on my
shoulder...he could be so funny & so charming. Sudden illnesses "out of the blue" are the worst, I hope Delilah gets well soon & has many good years yet ahead.
