    Nyar, Blue-Tongue Skink

This month-ish thing is fired. My son came downstairs yesterday with the news that Nyar, his blue-tongue skink, had died. It was particularly hard since this was the first pet that was really his that’s passed away - we’ve had to euthanize dogs in their old age, but they were more family pets, and the two he remembers best were at the ends of long, gentle declines, not sudden/unexpected.

Nyar was in his hide at 2 am, by 10 am he was out of his hide and deceased. No signs of trauma, thrashing around, etc., just gone. He was about 3 years old, had been eating normally, and shown no signs of illness. His enclosure is in my son’s room, so away from all the other reptiles, and when I was taking care of him while son was on the road, I was careful to clean my hands thoroughly to prevent the spread of the mite plague, which seemed to have been successful. His room also stays closed most of the time. Nyar’s UV light had been replaced recently, as the fixture was acting up, but no signs of MBD. Last time I handled Nyar personally was a couple weeks ago, and he was his normal, ornery feisty self.

I volunteered to go clean up the enclosure, while husband and son picked a spot for a grave (son’s between jobs, so decided not to have a necrospcopy done). It did look like there was some blood in some feces. I didn’t take the IR thermometer with me, but the temps in the enclosure felt ok and the Herpstat wasn’t throwing any errors.

I left orders with the dogs to take care of my son today and give him lots of snuggles. Not a happy camper myself, but more worried about my boy. Wondering if the enclosure will still be in his room or not when I get home tonight (I know he won’t pitch it, but he might not want it right there reminding him).

    Re: Nyar, Blue-Tongue Skink

My boy and my not-snuggly (hah!) husky yesterday. Pippin was taking his turn being therapy dog.
