The King of Fruits: Have you experienced?
ok i know everyone here loves their pineapple, but have you dabbled in Durian - The King of Fruits?
saw this this morning (https://www.yahoo.com/news/rotting-d...2024579.html):
A Rotting Durian Fruit Prompted a Gas Leak Scare and Evacuations on a Melbourne College CampusFears of a gas leak caused around 500 students and staff to be evacuated from a university library in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday.
But instead of poisonous vapors, the 40 firefighters and specialists called to the scene found a rotting durian fruit stashed in a cupboard, according to the Herald Sun.
Melbourne’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade had sent out an alert about a possible chemical hazard at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology after the smell of gas was reported at the campus library.
A fire brigade spokesperson told the Sun that the odorous Southeast Asian fruit set off alarms after it filtered through the air conditioning.
In a statement titled “Rotten afternoon on campus,” the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said firefighters gave the “all clear” after the smelly fruit was located and removed.
“After a comprehensive search, firefighters identified the smell was not chemical gas, but gas generated from rotting durian,” it said.
Durians, dubbed the king of fruits, are a sharply divisive creature. Notorious for their prickly outer shell and pungent aroma, which is often likened to rotting trash or gym socks, they are also relished for their creamy, sweet interior. Durians are banned from Singapore’s subway system and from many hotels around Asia.
i have had it a few times. yes, it's stinky. nauseous actually. the smell has been described as rotting corpse but i think that's going way overboard. Lol i think it's more like rotting onions and gym socks. it is a sweet fruit but i didn't like the texture (and smell). it's creamy but wierd in an onion way. i don't really know how to describe it. anyway i have had it fresh, frozen-thawed and in a smoothie! the taste will stick around in your mouth for a bit for sure.
Edit: poll added!
this stuff is not allowed in public transport like buses and subways. my brother-in-law's mom is Malaysian and when she eats Durian, her husband makes her eat it in the backyard lol.

Re: The King of Fruits: Have you experienced?
Lol yeah I've had it too. It was an interesting experience. Can't say that I totally disliked it, but also I'm not running to eat it again. It was just like, odd, you know? Texture and smell are both super strange

Re: The King of Fruits: Have you experienced?
I've had it served fresh/frozen-thawed/in a smoothie/in cookies/dried sugar wafers/hard candy-and I've never been able to swallow a single bite of anything with Durian and/or Durian flavored. I've tasted all of the above and promptly regurgitated each one of them. I'm not a big fan of onions.
I think 'King of Fruits' is like calling Greenland 'Green-Land' a misnomer by the local population to instill interest...

Re: The King of Fruits: Have you experienced?
i've never had it, or smelled it, but i'd like to! i've seen them at the supermarket and tried to take a whiff, but i don't think the outer part is what smells lol. can anyone describe what it's like to eat? i'm reading the wiki and it's like custard??
i've had Durian-flavored things before and IIRC they were just okay.

I've never even heard of it. I love onions but I think I'll just quit there...call me a "coward"? I've never craved "rotten onions" either.
I do appreciate the education though.

How's this for a pile of durian?
They had to keep it refrigerated to avoid a health code violation.
Edit: WHO SAID THEY LOVED IT?! Nobody loves this abomination. Do you know they wear safety helmets when harvesting because of the spikes and it truly smells like rotten onions and bad socks and tastes like it too.
