Re: Reptile Prime, now with free shipping

Maybe once my paper supply is gone I will switch my cages to the Reptile Prime. I currently use it in my racks and I like it.

My larger Boas make quite a large pee - does this stuff manage to contain a large amount of urine into a small spot??

    That is quite relative.

A large amount of urine will make a larger spot. That said, it contains the urine far better then the other substrates. You will have to spot clean a larger area for a larger snake. To me that is still worth it, because I don't like my animals to lay on urine soaked paper or aspen, not to speak of the smell that permeates the whole room.

You could always just test it out in one cage.

I know of one person that mixes Reptile Prime with Repti Chip for the larger snakes. It dries out the wet Repti Chip quicker, plus it keeps the snake from moving the fluffier Reptile Prime around to much. It works better at containing messes then Repti Chip alone.

I mixed it for a while simply to use up my left over Repti Chip. I like the Reptile Prime by itself, better, but with larger snakes it may be an option? Just try different things in one cage before you commit totally

since I currently use paper, I also keep a bowl of damp spaghum moss in their cages to keep humidity up. I may not need that any longer with the Reptile Prime. Your thoughts. Do you mist the cages.

The tubs, only if there is a shed cycle going on. Aside from that, they hold enough humidity.

My display cage I mist about once the week and that works great. I use one of those gallon/sprayer with the pump. Makes life so much easier.

How much you have to mist probably depends on the humidity in your house. If you have low humidity you will have to mist more often. However, with the right mist bottle, that isn't even an issue, imho.

I have three boa's. I always worry about either too low humidity or too high. I have been told that just as long as there is no condensation in the cage - the actual number reading on the humidity gauge doesn't really matter.

I try to stay at around 60% except while in shed.

How is Brian being “upfront” with free shipping by not telling you about the exact same increase in price to cover the “free” shipping? In my book with over 20 years in retail/wholesale at all levels, he is clearly back dooring you, far from being “upfront”.

Some may consider this shady or unethical. Me? I think it would be better to advertise the product at $20.99 shipped and drop the “free shipping” claim. That way I can appreciate his change in the pricing structure. But to turn it into a marketing deception is just wrong.

Folks that consider this shady/unethical may not buy any snakes either. To me, his gambling snake sales as well.

I do agree with you that the no tax is pretty sweet!

That’s my view from the saddle and worth what you paid for it.
Someone who gets it!!! Thanks Reinz. I was not knocking the product. I was knocking the whole free shipping scam. I mean if he does something like this, what is to make me believe anything else he says.

As for no tax, that is pretty normal for me. Whenever i order something online as long as the company is outside Washington State, i dont pay tax.

And my view of the product still stands. It is decent for what it is. it does have flaws like any other product and i was pointing them out so people who have large constrictors like burms, retics, boas will know this stuff would not be good for them unless they want to have constantly bare cage floors and substrate piled up on the sides of the walls and corners.

Not blaming the guy for wanting cash. We all love cash and it makes the world go round. But like i said before, the throwing out free shipping when he just hid the shipping in a newer higher priced product is flat out deceptive. It would be like me buy a certain type of BP and then getting a different one even though their values are the same without being told. I mean not really but i hope you get my point. And i mean i dont really care personally as i dont plan on using the product but i am the kind of guy who doesnt like to see the BS. If i tell you something, that is what it is. I am not going to try and deceive you or sleight of hand you and i personally dont like those tactics or kind of people.

But anyways, it is what it is. Wont affect me either way as i dont buy from BHB anyways.

Too 1 week to get a bag to Washington State. That $5 shipping gets you the slow boat to China shipping lol. Ordered that and my Zoo med Forest Floor from Chewy.com and got my cypress in 2 days.

What do you all do at feeding time??
I personally use either ReptiChips or aspen or now my new stuff is Zoo Med Forest Floor cypress.

When i feed the snakes, i just put down a piece of cardboard and feed them over it. They do still manage to drag it off sometimes. When that happens, i just watch them and pick off big pieces of substrate as they are swallowing.

I will tell you right now, Reptile Prime doesnt keep humidity as well as something bigger like cypress or Reptichips. I can tell this easily in my GTP cage. I have to mist the substrate a lot more. It does hold and release a lot of liquid but it releases it too fast so the stuff dries out pretty quick.

60% is the minimum i would do for a boa or retic. I keep all my boas and retic at 75-85% humidity. You can tell when they are nice and well hydrated. If you feel my retics skin, i swear it is as soft as silk. Feels like you could almost push your finger through it. Same with the boas. They are very soft and supple but not as silky feeling as the retic. And even my BP who keep around the same is soft as butter. When i kept her at 60-65%, he skin was kind of rough and not so elastic if that makes sense.

You dont want condensation dripping off the roof or running down the ceiling though and you dont want a wet cage floor. There is a big difference between relative air humidity and a flat out wet sopping mess of a cage floor lol.

And there is nothing wrong with indented kraft paper. I know a few BCC breeders who swear by that stuff. I also know a few who swear by aspen.
