    Corn Snake Morph Question

    Hello,

A few months ago I took home a corn snake that was not being taken care of very well, I had no prior knowledge of Corn Snakes but I just had a feeling she was not being fed properly and her cage was a mess and extremely small. I am happy to say after a couple months, I think me and her are pretty good for each other. I was told she was 2 years old and female. I am just wondering if you guys could help me out with her Morph. I have attached a couple pictures of her and her home, which I am pretty proud of lol, I think it looks pretty good. I know the UV Light and Heat light are not necessary but I just have them.

You didn’t post pictures of the snake...

enclourse looks good. How are you finding keeping the humidity in such a tank. Mine is similar and I’m having issues.

Do you only identify that little meter on the glass for temp and humidity. I found them to be so inaccurate

Nevermind about the pics. Sorry about that. When I reloaded the page they were there.

Awe I love the little highway stripes. Btw I have no idea of the morph name but I call them highway stripes lol. Nice looking corny you have there.

could you take the sticky gauge out. Snakes love to climb on them and rip them off getting stuck to them. Nothing sticky ever goes into an enclosure. Get an accurite digital gauge instead.

In terms of humidity I honestly have done nothing and it has always been good, temperature wise, I have a digital thermometer and stopper for the heat pad underneath and for the light on top, most of the time the light shuts off cause the temperature gets a bit hot on the left side. I was never a fan of the stick on readers, seemed cheap and inaccurate, but the reason I kept that one was cause it is actually really good lol, its almost exactly always the same as the digital reader. But I do get what you're saying regarding the snakes taking them off.

    Re: Corn Snake Morph Question

Nice looking corn. Also, not sure of the morph.

A couple thoughts from a long time corn snake keeper.

Humidity is not a big issue with corn snakes. They do fine with room humidity down to 25-30% and up to 70%. They are not sensitive like BP's, BCI's, etc.

My corn enclosure is usually about 40% humidity and I raise to 50-60% when Figment is about to shed. I just spray warm water in a once or twice a day. He has a great shed every time.

Did I understand you are using a thermostat and thermometer, but not a temp gun?

I would definitely get a temp gun. Ground temps are very important and the only way to get an accurate reading is with a temp gun. Corns do not like heat like other species from more tropical/dessert climates. They are from the southeast US.

    Hot spot: 84-86F surface temp

    Ambient temps: 76-78F is ideal

    Cool spot: 76-78F

Unless digesting, my corn spends 80% of his time at about 76-77F.

He does use, and appreciate, the temperature gradient.

Not as many corn keepers on here as BP keepers, so I wanted to chime in.

Looks like a nice tank and you seem like you want the best for your corn. I would just check the temps to be safe and keep asking questions as they come up.

    Re: Corn Snake Morph Question

Looks like your set up has already been covered so I'll address the morph. Its a dark morph (lacking reds) like anery, cinder, or charcoal. The stripes looks more like a normal stripe and not tessera. The yellow in the throat area indicates it as an adult as that appears with time. My guess would be an anery stripe. Charcoal and cinder don't develop as much yellow.

Thank you Dakski for all the information, will definitely look into the Temp Gun, they are not too pricey either.

67Temp, incredible lol, you were spot on, that's very impressive, Thank you so much for the help! My guess was always some sort of Ghost Stripe Corn Snake, but Anery Stripe definitely looks right.

I guess 1 more question would be, when I first got her, she used to move a lot in her small cage, constantly moving, in the new tank she pretty much just sits on top of the heat pad in her cave the whole time. I once read a constant moving ball python is a stressed out python, you want them to stay kinda in the same place not doing much, is it safe to assume that would be the same for a Corn?

Yeah, you can order a heat gun on Amazon pretty cheap, or even get one from Home Depot, etc.

Just make sure you calibrate it! They are usually off a little, depending on room temp and brand, etc.

I hit something with proper temps, like a thermometer or my house thermostat, then see the read out on the temp gun. If off, I adjust when I get a reading. In other words. Thermostat/thermometer reads 70F, but temp gun reads 71F. I would subtract 1F from whatever reading I got in the tank. NOTE: You have to calibrate every time, or if you know the temps are never off more than 1F, I wouldn't worry to much as long as things are consistent. Also, the farther from the spot you are reading, the less accurate. I try to stay within 3-5 inches from where I am reading the temp.

Corns can be pretty laid back, unless they are looking for food! Mine moves around at night (they are nocturnal) and when hungry. Otherwise, pretty chill.

How often and what are you feeding? How much does she weight/how big? If feeding too often or meals too big, she might not get hungry enough to search for food. Corns will eat every time offered pretty much, even if they don't need food. They are opportunistic and aggressive feeders.

Another theory is that if it's too cold on the cool side and/or ambient temps, she is staying on the hot pad because she has to. Even if the hot spot is too hot, she will do that thinking it is the best option.

    Re: Corn Snake Morph Question

Mine all go through phases. For a few days after they feed they are all on the warm side and in a food coma. A few days prior to feeding day they all start coming out and cruising their tanks and using the cool side hides. Also when they are in blue they will tend to be a recluse or they spend a few days in their wet hides.
