Retained shed, or hasn't shed yet?

Leopold, my banana ball, went blue last week but I hadn't seen any shed in his tank/any indication he had started to shed since then. No biggie. Today I took him out and he was extra wrinkly and miserable looking so I gave him a nice soak for about 45 minutes and wouldn't you know, he shed his entire skin in about 2 pieces. Now I'm wondering if he had a completely retained shed or if he hadn't shed yet and the soak just accelerated it? The humidity in his tank was 50 give or take, which I know is low but the weather in New England has been hard to combat. I've decided in a repti fogger instead of multiple daily mistings but I digress.

When he was in the water, it took a few minutes for his skin to become visibly loose, then it came off very nicely after that for the most part.

Any ideas as to whether it was a completely retained shed or what?

Sounds to me like he just hadn’t shed yet, but I would also like to recommend using sphagnum to help with humidity. Probably part of the reason his skin was looking so wrinkly. Two pieces isn’t bad though. It’s when it’s a ton of tiny pieces that you should worry

That's what I was thinking/hoping. And I have lots of sphagnum on both the hot and cool sides but I just can't win with this dry winter weather!! The mini warm spell we're having in NE has actually bumped the humidity a little bit already though

Wow. Yeah I struggled with humidity when I kept my bp in my eco terra. Had to cover the top in foil, use moss, and spray still. So happy that I don’t have to worry about that with my T8 anymore

Yep. Exo terra here until my T8 shows up. I have half the top foiled, use spagnum (sp?) moss, have a room humidifier keeping my office annoyingly (for me) humid, but good for him! My T8 can’t come fast enough lol. I’m kind of in the same boat. I picked up my little guy last week, noticed the start of some shed, and the grey eyes, so I’ve let him be. It’s been a week, and he’s chilling in his hot hide. I actually lifted it a little to check to see if he was still alive (thank god he is!) So I’m anxiously awaiting his first shed with me!

Hi . Looking at your other posts ...

One recent thread you advised he went blue just FOUR days ago so basically he hadn't had time to shed .
Next time as soon as you notice he's got his colour back and his eyes have cleared you should start spraying morning , after work and at bedtime then he will shed a few days ( up to 7 days ) later .
You normally find the skin in a messy lump under one of the hides. They dont leave perfect shedded skins around like Kings/ Corns do ...

How can you tell if it's a retained shed versus just sad and wrinkly looking? I just felt bad cause he was looking so miserable and I know my humidity wasn't ideal

Re: Retained shed, or hasn't shed yet?

Guess it just comes with experience..

With you saying just three or four days ago that his eyes were blue ... they stay blue / milky colour for a few days then as I mentioned they go clear again and then they normally shed in the next 5 to 7 days ...
You spray frequently as soon as the eyes clear ..
