    First rattlesnake sighting this season

Southern California. Found a little snoot watching what was going on. A friends 4 year old and dog were playing when this guy decided he wanted to see what was up.

Young southern pacific rattlesnake. I had the friend pull his kid (who wanted to catch and keep the snake) inside to just let it be. It retreated shortly after. Good thing he works on making sure his kid and pets are trained to never actually attempt to catch, get close, or otherwise bother them or any snake.

Gorgeous creature, and one of my favs. Love when i run into them at a safe distance when hiking up at santa rosa plateau. These kind have almost always just stayed still and not move at all whenever they realize we have spotted them. Almost as if dead, but when left alone they disappear leaving behind only a trail if it was a sandy/ loose dirt terrain. Phone picture so please excuse horrible quality but those face markings are beautiful and clear.

We have a ton of those bad boys running around here in Utah but I haven't been lucky enough to come across one for a couple years though unfortunately. It's always a nice treat.
