I love when their little faces peek out, so sweet

Eventually, though, they have that "sweet little face" pressed up against wherever the enclosure opens and you better be ready with a rat when you open it LOL !!

Had a few moments with snakes surging out at me mouth wide open, whew !!! LOL

With large rats its at least 14 days. Sometimes a bit more, but usually not less.

I let him decide. I know him so well...I know when he is "hunting" and acting hungry. So I wait. He is SO big I'm not interested in "stuffing" him. He does really well on "his" schedule. He took his first LONG break last year, 8 month, barely lost any weight.

Usually he wouldn't take long breaks. I think he "knew" there were available females around, LOL, and thats all he worried about.

After I feed him, he goes to his hide. That usually lasts for at least 5 days or so? He will then occasionally stroll around the cage. Its a very slow moving, hanging out, kind of exploring. That can last for days. Sometimes he hides again.

When ready for food he is right out in the open , and he looks INTENSE. He is very focused on what is going on, will follow movement and get excited when you come close to the cage. That is how I "know" he is ready for more. I usually feed him within a day or two of this behavior.

    Completely follow "his" lead

Its cool that some of these guys & gals are good like that.. I see it with healthy well bred Balls a lot. Mine do the same.. I could forget the schedule and just feed when they want... Well that may not be so good at this point or they will go off eventually because they look for it about every 3-4 days... I just went to look and they are both out basking with their heads under the slider door I feed at looking out. lol.
Like the song "how much is that doggy in the window" hahahaha.

Haha...all my others ARE on a schedule, or else I would have to feed every 3 days. I don't like to over feed so when they are young, I watch that they do not get "to" much.

With Jag, though, it works to go at his pace. Medium rats leave him unsatisfied and roaming. But large rats keep him happy, he just doesn't eat as often. But to me, he looks "content". His condition is great, not fat, not skinny.
