Hoggies in Iowa
Hey guys! I am a little confused regarding the laws on Hognoses in Iowa. I was lead to belive that they(Western Hogs) were illegal to keep in Iowa, that there wasnt even a permit you could get. But the other day I was at a pet store a an employee was telling me about his Western Hoggie that he owned Could anyone shed some light on this?

Western Hognose are illigal in Colorado, and require a permit in Illinois and Iowa

Would you know where you could obtain a permit? I assume that you have to pay a fee to get said permit?

I am not sure if you can apply online or not, I am sure you can, your best bet is to start here http://www.iowadnr.gov/ and inquire about how this can be done.

Re: Hoggies in Iowa
I got an email back and they are only legal to keep with a scientific permit or educational permit since they are listed as endangered in Iowa.

It's a LONG shot, but have them clarify if this applies to albino Hogs as well.
Wisconsin is finicky like this for native species as well, but I believe that while you cannot possess an endangered animal native to the state, you are sometimes able to get around the regulation if the animal is clearly not a wild specimen....example: it has albinism.
I believe there's an eastern state like this as well for cornsnakes....you cannot possess normal phase animals but animals with albinism are OK.
Check and see.

Unfortunately GA is the same way about various species as well, either prohibited or allowed with a permit that is hard to get, and if affect the animal regardless of paint job and whether or not they are captive bred.
