    Covering Enclosure w/ Blanket

Anyone see any harm covering an enclosure w/ a blanket to help w/ ambient temps? I have a PVC enclosure w/ small vents on each side and it's helped to hold the ambients when outside temps are low. I've loosely laid the blanket covering the back, sides and front but i'm wondering if that limits airflow enough for my BP to breathe properly.

    Re: Covering Enclosure w/ Blanket

In the winter I close the side vents (just bend a piece of foil over it loosely - not taped or anything) on my PVC cage and leave the back open. But my tank is not up against a wall or anything so there is plenty of airflow. Blanket should be fine as long as you don't have heat lamps (Fire hazard)

I also have heat lamps - so the top of the cage has two 8 inch holes in it. so vents aren't as important

It does nothing for temps, but does hold in humidity better.

No cage is too large - nature is the best template - a snoot can't be booped too much

It gets down to 66 and I have no problem with the ambient temps in my pvc enclosure. Remember, if the far walls of the pvc get cold its not so bad as long as the point from hide to hide is within temps. I keep my hides a few inches in from the wall to create a buffer zone. Works great.

I would be worried covering all the vent holes would limit the already limited air flow in your enclosure.

Your ambients get down to 66 in the enclosure?? My pvc is sitting a couple inches away from a wall which has a small transom window about it. I try to keep the ambients in the enclosure about 75 but if the outside temps creep below 30 degrees I've been draping a blanket over the cage w/ the room heater set at 80.

No no my room temp gets to 66. My wall temps never fall below 72. My ambient is between 83 and 79 depending on the location in the enclosure. I have an air buffer inside the cage where the cold his is about 4 inches in from the wall and about even with the edge of the RHP. It means the cold hide sits about 79 degrees. The warm hide is also about 4 inches in from the wall and it rests at 90 constantly. Dante cruises through the day and night between the warm and cool hide.

I don't do the typical RHP placement. I have it slightly offset form the front center of the enclosure to control only ambient temps. I use hte UTH heat tape to control hot temps. It has worked out amazingly well and inf act Dante is in his cool hide right now while the outside temp is 33

I also have the enclosure a foot away from the wall to avoid it getting cold. It really helps keep temps up. There is a HVAC vent above the enclosure but I have that about 90% closed. Creating buffers like this help all my enclosures stay warmer. The coldest enclosure is my rosy boa which hits about 73 against he cold wall but again the hides are in from the walls to give a buffer.

Ahhh makes more sense....sounds like I really need to invest in an RHP!

I've covered just the front with either a baby blanket or towel if I knew the temps in the room were going to drop below 72*F. The rear and sides of the rack were enclosed. It was fine and worked to bump up the ambient temp in the tubs.

Wait how are you heating your PVC enclosure?!

I have two UTHs (one on each side) controlled by a HerpStat2. I rely on a wall unit in my basement to bump up the ambients in the winter months. Since this is my 1st winter w/ my BP, I'm constantly looking at outside temps and trying to predict which setting I need the wall unit at to get my desired ambients (>75).....and if I need to use a blanket.

Best investment I did was an UTH and RHP regulated by a herpstat 2. I never even worry anymore about my BP's temps.
