The Russian Rat Snake/Elaphe Schrenckii Thread!

    Let's give this a try!

I've always been fascinated with these snakes and had my eye on them for a while now. I'm hoping to get a hatchling next year and thought it would be a neat idea to have a thread dedicated to these awesome snakes so we can all share our experiences and wisdom about them! I'm always surprised at how little information is documented about them so why not have the community gather together? We're all like family in a way :p

So current or old owners of Russian rat snakes feel free to share fun facts, pictures, resources, observations and care tips! Or anything you feel like sharing!

Future owners or fans share your excitement or inquiries!

I love Russian Rats! I'll probably never have one because I have limited space and a list of snakes I want to fill it up but I would love to have one someday! They seem like the best all around cloubrid to me with easy care, great personality and a larger size. (I like that although some people might not)

the first time i saw a Russian Rat snake was @redshepard's photos of her hatchling. i'm new to colubrids so i gave "Russian Rat snake" a quick google and i could not BELIEVE the color change!!! they are absolutely STUNNING as adults! i'd love to have another colubrid some day, and with all the hype around here it will probably end up being a Russian Rat snake.

They really are amazing creatures with big personalities! Awesome vision snakes! I first fell in love when I would read Zina's posts and rainbowsnake's Levi on tumblr. There was a moment I half considered getting one before a ball python but I knew the moment I first held a bp I knew there was no going back. Especially with Tapioca being love at first sight <3

But now it seems I'm able to have both! Yay!

I'm already on my breeder's waiting list for a Russian rattie and hoping for a successful clutch next year! Fingers crossed!

YAY! I'm so glad you started this thread. We just got Bonsai a week ago and he is our FIRST SNAKE EVER. It was a total drag doing research because there is painfully little out there. But what there is out there made them sound freakin' awesome, so we decided to take the plunge. I would have killed to have a comprehensive thread on them from a ton of different owners and their experiences, so this will be great for future owners.

My guys is a hatchling and is the clutch mate of @redshepherd's Jack.

I am learning as I go, but first and foremost they have an irresistible, unsure of the scientific term, so we'll call it "smooch face".

Haha you sure that face isn't the Magnum?

I was very surprised to learn how simple their husbandry needs are compared to a ball python! Ah yes I remember you posting somewhere going for a hatchling shortly after redshepherd got Jack! Prior to that didn't Zerkle confuse your address with hers?

YES - Magnum! Or is it Blue Steel? hehe

Zerkle's cracked me up because they couldn't wait to send me redshepherd's snake, despite me repeatedly telling them I hadn't ordered one. And then when I did purchase one a week later - it took them forever to answer my questions, or confirm shipment, or send me tracking. It was like pulling teeth! But I imagine the life of a big breeder can be chaotic, so it's all good!

First question of curiosity! What is (or was) everyone's feeding guide? I often heard/read they prefer smaller, multiple prey items vs larger, fewer prey. Is there a similar feeding guide that can be followed according to their weight as they grow to determine when to up prey size? Or change feeding frequency?

+1. That would be tremendously helpful. I am unsure of when to start moving him up to the next size. At the moment he's still on large f/t pinkies every Wed & Sat, but I feel like he should graduate to something else soon.
