Ugggghhh! 55 gallon sprung a leak!!!!

Well, I was woken up yesterday around 4am by my girlfriend. She wakes me up saying "I think something is wrong with Lil' Miss Swim's tank". Apparently she got up to pee and noticed the water looked "low". Well, low was in understatement. I literally just cleaned it Sunday afternoon, so it was full just 12 hours earlier and now i have over 20 gallons on my floor and water is continuing to drip to the floor. After a few minutes of inspection I found that one of the corner seals had sprung a leak. Luckily it was less than half way down and "most" of the water was retained...
Well, to try to keep this story relatively short...fast forward to 3pm. After working a funeral bereavement luncheon and cooking for 60+ people by myself, I hop on the train to town to shop for a new tank and borrow Dad's truck. Ended up getting a great deal and upgrading to a 75 gallon. However, the 75 was to replace my other 55 gallon, so I had to switch both tanks out, including fish. Ugggh, fast forward to 10:30pm, FINALLY done!!!
LONG day, but the tanks look great!!

Yeah, turned out to be a happy accident. No doubt. It could have been a LOT worse. All fish are fine, water is cleaned up and the Oscars got an upgrade. Was planning on just replacing the 55 glass, but Petco had the $1/gallon sale on tanks up to 40gallons and 50%off 55 & 75s. So I got a 75 for 90 bucks. Already had all the equipment, but ordering a new filter and heater just for overkill. With the Oscars in there you can't have too much filtration, hahaha.

I'll get some up soon. Letting the water settle a bit now. It still has a little cloudiness to it due to the large amount of new water. I used about 25-30% old water to keep the chemical balance in place, but the tanks will need to cycle a bit before being "pic worthy" hahahahha

Re: Ugggghhh! 55 gallon sprung a leak!!!!

I had this happen to a 120 gallon tank except it drained completely all over the floor. What a nightmare that was. I decided at that point to get out of the fish keeping hobby. I sure do miss my big Oscar I had though. Raised him from a tiny baby and he was 14" long when the tank debacle happened. Fish tanks can be alot of work - I can't say I miss that part.

Good luck with your new tank.

Re: Ugggghhh! 55 gallon sprung a leak!!!!

I had a leak years ago on a 55 gal. That one was the fault of a canister filter seal going bad. I lost about 10 gallons of water before I noticed (it was overnight, so I was sleeping). Water went down to the basement, and gave a nice square watermark footprint on my basement's ceiling.

Glad it worked out for you, with no loss of fish.

Ugggh!!!! 120 GALLONS?!?! I've been considering getting out of the fish hobby too. But I think this actually re-inspired me and reminded me how much I love my tanks. They are a lot of work, and Oscars are messy fish, so even more work than most freshwater fish. However, I love the tranquility of the tanks. I got this pair of Oscars as babies about an inch long and they're coming up on 3 years and are family at this point. They've both battled some illnesses right from the start, but they're troopers!! They're both around 10 inches now and doing well. They seem to love the new 75 gallon with the added depth. I didn't realize how big my PECO was either til I had to move him, he's a BEAST!!!

My oscar had the entire 120 gallons to himself - he had it made!! I did huge water changes every single weekend - what a pain in the you know what. I had huge filters on this tank too. I had an FX6 and 2 AC110. Water was always crystal clear though.
