Help with keeping humidity up?

Hi all,

I’m Sera, and I recently adopted a white python named Bowie after wanting one for quite awhile. I know how important keeping the humidity between 50-65% in their terrarium, however I’m having dofficulty keeping t at that humidity level. He is in a glass terrarium with plastic covering half of it to try and keep the humidity in. He also has a mister that is running on an interval to keep up the moisture levels. Any suggestions are welcome. I need to buy him a larger tank but am trying to accommodate him slowly as he was in a much smaller enclosure before I got him, so any suggestions about transferring to a 40 gallon tank are also appreciated.

I assume as you are posting in the ball python section you mean a white ball python correct?

Some more information is needed as it is really difficult to know what is going on without it.

What substrate are you using?
Size of the tank?
What are you using to measure the humidity? Those little stick on analog dials are useless.
Pictures of your tank setup will help a great deal to better see how it is setup.

Correct. He is a white ball python. Right now he is in a 20 gallon tank. Substrate is aspen snake bedding. I have a thermometer and hygrometer probe in the tank by all living things. I will upload picture within the next hour once I’m on a computer.

Change the Aspen. Aspen is horrible for Humidity. Im finding that out myself with my baby, Dean. Coco-Fiber or Repti-Bark works well(I think)

That's your problem, no doubt about it.

In glass type enclosures, aspen will not do the job required for ball python humidity. Too dry.

Reptile prime

or

Cypress mulch

...are good choices. I heat them up in the oven in a disposable turkey pan @ 325 for 45 minutes before using to prevent any bugs/mites from surviving before it gets to my animals.

As others have said, aspen is not great for humidity. Coco fiber would be wonderful. Cypress mulch would be your second best bet. Eco earth is coco fiber and forest floor is cypress mulch by the brand zoo med. Reptile Prime is your best bet but it requires ordering online from their site which is super easy.
