Question Is it legal to own ball python in San Francisco?

I have seen a document saying it's not legal to have python & boas in San Francisco, but the document was from 9 years ago . I was wondering if it is legal now. and if it's not legal , Do you guys have suggestions for a beginner snake legal in SF ?

I believe you can legally keep most lizards, small colubrids and other non-prohibited animals. Boas and Pythons are prohibited based on what I can find here, contact your city and county departments to confirm if unsure, they are usually happy to give you the info:

    I copied/pasted:

    SEC. 50. PROHIBITION.
No person shall have, keep, maintain or have in his possession or under his control any wild and potentially dangerous animal as defined in Section 51, unless excepted therefrom pursuant to Sections 50 through 66 of this Chapter.

SEC. 51. DEFINITION OF "WILD AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ANIMAL".
    II. Class Reptillia
    A) Order Squamata
    1. Sub-Order Serpentes, all front and rear fanged venomous snakes and all species of the Families Boidae and Pythonidae.
    2. Sub-Order Lacertilia, both venomous species of the Family Helodermatidae (Gila monster and Mexican beaded lizard).
    B) Order Crocodilia (crocodile and alligator).

Go to a petsmart in your area, if they have ball pythons you can have them.

There are no PetSmarts in the city of San Francisco, the closest one is in Daly City which of course, different ordinances would apply. There are a few PetCos in SF.

I posted the laws that say they are not allowed in SF. SF has some incredibly stringent laws regarding pet ownership, especially for pit bulls dogs.

I don’t think that’s a good indicator - corporate management may not be aware of local regulations. I’ve experienced something very similar in a different retail sector.

Yeah, I believe you're prohibited from doing so unfortunately.

.....actually, I would ask around a few local pet stores first. You cannot tell me that you can't get a permit for an exemption. If you can't get a permit to own a ball python.....well, I have nothing to say except that your city is run by a bunch of idiots.
