    Newest Edition - A Rescue

I read The Complete Carpet Python a few weeks ago and knew I wanted a carpet eventually but couldn't decide which one to add to my collection. Fast forward to last night when I get a frantic message from a friend that her cousin's son brought home a "...huge, slimy looking, creepy, slithery snake" she wanted out of the house ASAP or she was just going to let it go in the yard (we live in Western NY and tonight's temps are going to be in the upper 40's so I couldn't let that happen).

I arranged to meet her this morning and take possession of the snake (she texted me a picture of it through the tub it was in marked "Jaguar Carpet Python" and I was thinking well, guess I'm getting a jag LOL)...although IMHO I think breeding an animal with a known neuro disorder is cruel...anyway.....

I bring the snake home and it's in a tub that was filthy, no water in the bowl, old feces, and contained cigarette butts...All the while I'm think what scumbags...I'm glad I got this snake away from that kind of treatment.

Transferred the snake with the aid of a hook to the quarantine tank and it wasn't aggressive at all, appeared to be healthy weight, no stuck shed, and rather docile, more inquisitive than anything. Even crawled up my arm past my head to my shoulder at one point. I was amazed at how strong it was and able to stretch out without support.

Spent a few minutes exploring the new digs and went into the hide over the UTH (90 degrees) I'm sure it appreciated a little heat since there wasn't any provided previously.

No idea how old, sex (novice so I'm not going to sex it myself), or what particular carpet it is...except that it's mine now and will live a much better life than it was.

Now what enclosure to order....a T10 or T5, or T12....decisions decisions....

Here are some pics I grabbed today with my phone (sorry no fancy camera here).....thoughts and comments are GREATLY appreciated from current carpet owners.

Nevermind the temp reading....this is when I first got it set-up...now a balmy 81 degrees and 60% humidity with a hot spot of 90.

Such a lucky snake to find you! I would love to get a carpet python, it is on my wish list if I ever have the space/money to expand my collection beyond balls. Rescuing is great, when you end up rescuing a beautiful animal that you would have wanted anyway, double the reward!

Grats! Really nice looking reptile who already is much more comfortable and stable. Cigarette butts????? Are you kidding me? How cruel.

Nice looking carpet, glad it got a better home with you!

I wouldn't go shorter than a T10 for an adult, all three of mine (Bredli, JCP, IJCP) like space to climb.

Very nice looking carpet and great job on the rescue. It doesn't look like a jag to me but could be a cross of some sort. You can never tell with carpets unless you have good lineage information from the breeder/seller. I would go with a T-10 at a minimum. The T-12 or A-20 are other great options. Carpets are awesome to watch when they're provided with lots of vertical space. I started my carpets in T8s but it's time for some upgrades now that they've grown.

Doesn't look very jag to me.... My jag has a lot more light background space, but I'm no expert.

I have mine in a T11 with a basking shelf and large branch to climb on. I think an even taller cage would be used, as long as you provide climbing items.

Re: Newest Edition - A Rescue

Can't believe I haven't posted about Roger - he is an amazing addition to the collection!!! I know he's "just an undocumented carpet" but his patterns and colors are awesome. His personality (yes, I know some will argue that snakes don't have personality but the way he responds when I come into the room is pretty cool), temperament (not head shy, bitey, flighty, etc..), feeding (takes his prey (2 small rats every 7 days) with a hard hit and does his thing without issue), and everything else about him. I REALLY got lucky when I took him in. He does the carpet python "hiss/whistle" thing occasionally but is NEVER aggressive. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all of my snakes, but I really get a kick out of Roger.

I thought it was pretty cool when he was laying out so I grabbed this pic. The way the colors change based on body/scale direction and his iridescence is so cool in the sun and the blacks looks like velvet quite honestly. He usually lives in the sky hide, but he comes down for water and poop/pee.

His enclosure when I first set it up

    Just chillin'

    Older pic just hanging out

An older feeding pic....from the skyhide....awesome to watch...

    Where he's usually found

On the jungle gym I built for the snakes to get a little exercise and enrichment

Good to see Rodger is doing well. I love Carpets, I like bps but Carpets are so much more inquisitive and active. Even the muddy undocumented one's are beautiful, they have such a presence. I guess they really have a way with me lol.

So happy he's doing well! What an awesome guy!

Sorry if you've addressed this before, but how did you secure the sky hide? Is it removable for cleaning? It's such a cool idea!
