    Also, could I just stick the uth inside the tank and then put a pierce of tile over the top of it and caulk around the tile to keep the heater from getting wet? Then I could just put my thermostat probe on the tile sheet then?

    Can't imagine that'll be safe, a UTH needs air circulation/ventilation to not be a fire hazard.
