Lowering Humidity Problems

I have two thirty gallon tanks and one ten gallon. All three have screen lids and uv lighting with heating pads. I am having a hard time lowering the humidity in all of them. It always reads past normal and at the edge of the tropical. What else can I do to lower it?

CHE's and spot bulbs helped me drop mine. What kind of gauge are you using, analog or digital? I started off with the analog ones and it was all over th place. I switched to digital and have been able to control it better.

Have you tested those hygrometers anywhere else but the enclosure? Do they actually function?

You can go get a digital hygrometer/thermometer combo unit from WalMart for $15, and it will help you determine whether or not the dial-gauges are even functioning properly.

The humidity in our house is normally 50-60%(Can you say "Bleh"?), and my Rosy's tank is just like yours, heat pad and screen lid, but no light. He seems to be doing fine as I have a tiny ceramic waterbowl(think rodent food bowl-2" in diameter) in the tank for him and it hasn't raised the humidity any.

Hmm. You can always try smaller waterbowls, turning the air conditioner on more frequently to suck some of the humidity out, or you can put some heat lamps in the room(I don't know, if it works in the cage, why wouldn't it work in the room). Try a few things and see how it goes.

Analog, it stays pretty steady though...they usually all rise or lower together simultaneously. I will go get a combo digital one to rotate inside cages when I find them, but our Walmart doesn't carry them it seems.

Home Depot and Lowe's also carry similar temp/humidity digitals. All are around 12 - 20 dollars. They are usually found in the outdoor thermometer/outdoor weather station areas.

One thing you can do if your hygrometer is working properly is replace your hides with cardboard hides. Cardboard naturally takes humidity (any moisture for that matter) out of the air. The rest of the suggestion above will do the tricl as well.

once you get a digital hydrometer, re-check everything. if the humidity is still high and you have screen lids, you can try a small personal fan and blow air across the tops of the tanks. basically more ventilation will lower humidity.
