Thumbs up Crash's first meal at home

About 24 hours after we bought him home, Crash had his first meal. The pet shop had been feeding him 2 feeder mice every Wed. but I went ahead & got them a day early. Put him in his dining room, dropped the mouse in, and after about 2 minutes - WHAM! That mouse never even had a prayer and I think he knew it. I thought it would be a little disturbing watching a live kill but it didn't bother me as bad as I thought it would. The first one must've served as an appetizer because the second one didn't last a minute.

I asked the shop about feeding live mice, based on what I've read around here and in a snake book about the possibility of injury to the snake. They advised watching him from a discreet distance (he doesn't like being watched when he's eating) to ensure nothing ill befalls him. That's what they've been doing. Everything went fine last night. We'll just have to watch carefully, especially when he gets larger and eats larger prey.

Thanks again for all the help!

well yes feeding live is cool in my book. glad to hear the feeding went well also if you ever wanted to though you could always try to wean him off of live to frozen thawed mice/rats

Congrats on the first feeding. The first is always the best Feeding live is just fine as long as you supervise. I feed all my snake live, but have fed f/t and p/k in the past. Like Brian said, you could always try to get him to take p/k or f/t if that would be easier for you. The way you should feed is what works best for you and the snake.

Re: Crash's first meal at home

That's great Melissa! So nice when they take to their feeding like that.

Actually it's funny, I'd rather watch a snake consume a mouse (we feed pre-killed but they still strike and coil as if it were alive) then I'd ever watch one of my cats after a mouse. Gawd that's just awful to see. Cats are just very cruel killers unfortunately and mine were spoiled house cats to boot.

Very glad to hear Crash is doing so well and you're all pleased with him.
