    Top of hide too hot?

I have a young ball python answer inside the the cage temps are perfect except the top of her hide sometimes spikes to 96f and often she basks up on top. I've heard this is too hot but I'm wondering if it's okay since the rest of the tank is good. the temp inside her hide is 80-85 which is semi close to her hot spot at 85-87 she has another hide near the cool end she never uses.. the cool end is around 75+.. I don't really want to relocate her hide because the temps inside will Be lower so will it be okay if she spends the night or day on top of her hide when it spikes to 96f.. also when it's not spiked it's around 89-91

What are you using for a heat source, how are you regulating it, and how are you measuring your temps?

Re: Top of hide too hot?

I'm using an IR gun to measure temps but also have 2 probe thermometers inside the cage (one inside her hide and one in the hot spot.. I use a 100w CHE and a 25w red mini halogen.. I know what youre gonna say heat mat with a thermostat.. well right now I'm kinda just doing a temporary set up while I make sure my mites I got from the petstore are 100% gone.. then I'll switch the setup conpleatly ( had perfect temps before the mites) so I'm unsure of permenant reptile pads and setting up thermostats.. I was just wondering if that's really too high or the snake is choosing it over the slightly cooler hot spot..

Actually I was thinking/wondering what the hide is made of. Is it one of the black plastic ones?
