What happens if you open c02 chamber and rats chests still moving?

Just out of curiosity what would happen if all the rats are unconsicious but chests still moving and you open the container before they stop breathing completely. Do they stay asleep and eventually die or will they start breathing fully again and wake back up?

If they are not dead because you did not let the CO2 run long enough, they will likely catch their breath and bolt out.

The very first time I euthanized rats years ago I underestimated the time and amount of CO2 needed and two were only passed out and when I opened the tank they started walking around.

Yeah it's not poison you're just suffocating them internally by depriving their blood of oxygen. They get regular air back they regain consciousness.
