    General consensus seems to be that this can happen when the snake is overheated and isn't able to thermoregulate itself. And being that the metabolic rate in snakes is controlled by their body temperature, it causes feelings of hunger, and combined with confusion/neurological damage from overheating, could cause this to happen. Even though it's extremely rare.

    And given that it seems to happen most often in kingsnakes (who eat other snakes lol), it makes sense.
