Super Rare Boa Found Once Again After 64 Years!!

This is a neat story! The Cropan's Boa hasn't been seen since 1953. Its not extinct! A live female was found almost 2 weeks ago!

WASHINGTON: One of the world's rarest boa - that dwells in the forests of Brazil - has been sighted for the first time in 64 years, indicating that the species is alive and well, scientists say. Corallus cropanii - also known as Cropan's boa - is known from only a handful of dead specimens collected after the snake was first seen and described in 1953.

The slippery serpent was captured in January - the second living specimen ever seen, and the first glimpsed in 64 years. The boa was brought to local scientists by rural residents of the Ribeira Valley Region in Brazil.

The snake, a female, measured about 1.7 metres in length and weighed 1.5 kilograms.

they're gonna observe it for a bit and then release it back into the wild w/ a radio transmitter so they can continue to track it, study it and find more.

I always cringe when I hear about radio transmitters on small animals. it's hard to imagine a snake not being bothered by it, but maybe it's not a problem, but it does make me cringe.

the radio transmitters used these day are not the big bulky collars most people think of from 80s nature shows. Usually it's a little thing attached to the skin that will fall off after the adhesive wears off (probably when the snake sheds in this case) or they're injected under the skin like a pet micro chip or surgically inserted into the animal's body cavity.

yep, totally! this is welcomed news esp. when giraffes, cheetahs, rhinos, etc. are at the tipping point. i hope we can turn the tide but that's easier said than done.
