anyone breeding Russian Ratsnakes ? Elaphe schrencki
I used to have a couple of Russian Ratsnakes. I would like to get a single one once again and find it hard to find anyone that breeds/sells them.
Or even anyone that owns them.
Any owners ?
Any breeders on here ?
Thanks
Zina

Sylphie who is a member here breeds them but she is out of the country. Try to pm her and she probably can give you some references.
Stay in peace and not pieces.

I will try that.
Seems like not to many people breed those Russians. I wish I had never sold the ones I had.
They are the only snakes that actually truly did look forward to be taken out of the cage and "interact". Very curious little Beasties and a lot of fun ! I'm not sure why they aren't more popular. Perhaps because they look a bit plain as hatchlings ??
I definitely wouldn't mind adding one to the collection again. Bonus is that the actually enjoy and make use of a "display" cage with lots of climbing area. And if the house isn't kept particularly "cool" they don't need any additional heat.

My friend has one and they do seem to love coming out for sure. His male will just sit there and watch what's going on sitting in plain view, which isn't the most common for snakes. I don't think it's ever tried to bite, at least that I recall. They do love to climb so my friend has his in a 2 ft tall enclosure with vines and stuff in it to allow him to act more so natural.
If I had to guess the reason they're not kept more in the hobby, it's likely because of the color as adults, they're not the most bright and more so are plain/dull. Most Rat's are plain as babies, but as adults the black/yellow isn't very appealing I guess. I was looking for one before I settled on my Kunashir Island Rat. My baby was very nippy, something that the Russian wouldn't of been even as a baby.

Hey, I found a guy who breeds these guys if you're still looking. Let me know. He said babies come around June.

Thanks Albert!
Yes, I'm breeding them, but I'm from Europe, so unless you have someone who attends Hamm shows in Germany it would be hard to send them. But you can try Amy Zerkle (Zerkle Reptiles), I know that they work with them and usually have at least one clutch every year. I also know that Sunshine Serpents (on Facebook) worked with them so you can ask there too. I will try to remember who else in US has them and will let you know!

How cool, I have all but given up on that I decided to add a Blood Python to my collection for something "different then BP's" but I may be able to make room for a Russian as well.
Let me know

I haven't told the wife, I don't dare, but now I have the hankering for one. I would love to have a snake that more than tolerates me :~).
