Field herping in the rabbit hutch

Was checking the live mouse traps while doing evening chores. These traps are shallow metal boxes with trap doors. I have no idea how this big snake GOT in there, but he filled the WHOLE thing. I am very glad I found him in time. Desert Kingsnake. I apologised up and down for the indignity of it all. Beautiful animal. I even briefly held it - big case of sausage butt, and I didn't want to get musked. I let it go under the hay shed (away from my murderous chickens). Pretty sure there is a colony of mice under there, because my traps always catch babies. The mice problem has been terrible this year.

He probably got a good meal while in there .

I googled desert kingsnake---very pretty! I never see any really cool snakes around here, darnit. Apparently there's all kind of native snakes. . .somewhere . I just never see anything but garters.
