    Those are really good looking garter snakes. Probably the common garter species known as Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis. There are multiple subspecies but totally harmless and feed mostly on amphibians, fish , and earthworms. They usually are out hunting, foraging and usually go underground to brumate or hibernate. In a wood pile they are probably just doing a little of the above. Nice pics. This time of year is not brumating season.

    Yup, nice little New England brand garters. They are very active, they sun on top of the fire wood. I see them in the yard and when you spook them they head back for the safety of the wooden fortress that apparently I built for them.

    Heehee. These guys are too small for rats. However I feed my rejected f/t to the wild fox, raccoon, and bobcats.
