    Planning..

Hello, so im planning on making a terrarium.. thing is, with the way i want it the light would have to go inside the terrarium. I was wondering if there was something to cover the light with so my snakes wont burn themselves on the bulb? Id still want it to be able to produce the UVA rays.. any ideas?

are you talking about a heat bulb that puts off UV or a fluorescent tube?

UVA rays are unnecesary depending on the animal you are getting. Snakes do not need UV. If it is a snake you're getting I'd highly advise NOT to put a buld inside a terrarium, even if it is covered up. Even with other reptiles that benefit from UV, puting it inside the terrarium is not a good idea.

This as a blanket statement is not necessarily true. It is common practice to place bulbs inside the cages for many lizard species, especially the larger lizards that require basking temperatures over 100 degrees.

Those mercury vapor bulbs are pretty high wattages, and they get hot. I have seen cages built around them, but it would have to be far enough away from the bulb to not get hot to the touch. That type of bulb will kill the humidity in your tank.

I typically use nothing higher than 60 watts for my BPs

I have Jungle Dawn LED's set in Exo-Terra hoods. These hoods are black plastic rectangular boxes. As designed they sit on top, but I too, would like both of mine inside each terrarrium. The plan is to fit an aluminium screen (and maybe also an "egg crate" plastic light diffuser into a framed inset that can be bolted to the walls of the hood. The fixture would also require a rack to securely hold it.

Complicated, so I haven't started that project yet.
Probably when the summer garden winds down.

Hope you can find an arrangement that works for you with a UV tube.

I would just start searching for light guards if you want to go this route, like I said for a snake it CAN'T be hot to the touch, with lizards we just make sure they can't grab onto it.
